What's the oldest coin you've ever found in your change? I found two 10 won coins from the 70s, and by the looks of them they looked as if they were made in the 1870s Smile

(don't know the year but must be very old, haven't seen a 1 won coin since)

Found a dime from 1914 once, if I remember correctly.

I dug a 1923 Canadian nickel out of the floor of my parents' basement once. I remember looking it up in a coin guide and being ticked because for some reason the 1924 nickel was worth over $100 and the 1923 something like $1.25

There's a rumor that the 1998 500won coin is very rare and worth quite a bit to collectors.

Sorry, I meant to specify in Korea. I find older coins quite often back home in the US, and it struck me as odd that I've never found anything pre-1970's here. Anybody collect Korean coins?

I seen a 1972 10 won coin, but nothing older. There are many 1980's coins in Korea.
It tends to be that you find more older coins in America than in other places in my experiences.

in the us it wasn't rare to find pennies from the 40's in change. even that is changing as the copper in them make sthe metal worth more than the face value. the new pennies are some lightweight alloy.

My oldest Korean coin is a 1971 100 won. I keep checking my coins looking for anything older, but I usually only check the 100's. I better start looking for a 1998 500 won! Razz

Hmmm... I once found a 엽전 (probably a couple hundred years old) and it's been on my keychain ever since. As for older modern coins, I probably have quite a few from the 60s and 70s, as they weren't that old when I first lived in Korea. I even have a few from WWII that my dad picked up when his ship docked in Incheon in 1945 (of course, they say "Great Japanese Empire" on them).
