I am applying through the GEPIK program and wanted to start researching which areas to consider? This is my first time moving to Korea.
I was initially researching Bucheon and Anyang.
Somethings that are important:
Within an hour to Hongdae
Has a good foreign community
Also has a great nightlife on it's own so I don't always have to go into Seoul
Easy to walk around and have easy access to groceries and department stores
If you could also tell me the popular foreign/expat bars in that area that would be great. I know Bucheon is pretty popular, so I was looking for alternatives.
Thank You |

Though this topic does come up constantly: Anyang would fit your preferences, and you'd do well to include Gunpo and Uiwang as well, as they're the same city as Anyang for all intents and purposes (they were meant to be merged this past year but it fell through). If given a choice, Gunpo is a superior option to Uiwang. |

Maybe... not going to Korea for the nightlife would be a better option... I say this more to spare you the disappointment, than making any judgments about your character.
There is a correlation between people who come to Korea for the nightlife, and those who can't stand the place after living here a year (from my experience.) Why? My theory is that they begin to associate Korea with the feelings of rejection that are instilled in them every time they go to a club.
Most guys that I talk to show a significant drop in self-esteem (even very good-looking guys who are "Korea girl type") from the moment they get off the plane, to the moment they pack up and go home.
Don't waste time and money in clubs... Waste it on Koreancupid.com
Other than the Koreancupid.com part (I never use dating sites, they are retarded)... I am probably just projecting... So, ignore me... |

Uiwang is a toilet.
Gunpo/Sanbon and Anyang are all good choices. Maybe even Ilsan or Suwon. |

All the suggested places are new developments areas. Living expenses are high. You won't save as much money going to these places compared to say Yangju. |

Uiwang and Suwon are the same toilet. That said, I'm specifically referring to Naeson-dong, where Lotte Mart is, as it's about an eight minute bus ride from Indeogwon. It's boring as hell and I hated living there, but in the grand scheme of things it's not that bad (and under 20,000 to cab back from Itae). |

Can't go wrong with Ilsan, Bucheon, Bundang or Anyang. All have decent amount of foreigners and are pretty close to Seoul for a night out. If you want to be close to Hongdae, Ilsan is a pretty good bet. Usually takes about 40mins to get to Sinchon by bus on a Saturday night. If you leave quite late on Sat you can get to Sinchon in 25-30mins.
Gwangmyeong would be decent as well as it's pretty close to all the decent areas of Seoul, but I'm sure if there's much going on other then that. |

I agree about it being really convenient. I really liked living in Naeson dong except for the stupid highway. It was nice being able to get a bus straight to Sadang from right outside my apartment building and living right by Lotte Mart. I live on hagwon ga right now and walking for fifteen minutes or having to use some form of transportation just to buy chicken *beep* or to get to Seoul sucks.
It seems like most of the foreigners in Uiwang all live in the same few buildings by the highway in Naeson dong anyway. I don't think OP has to worry too much about being stuck in a shipping container down by the great Uiwang River if that's the city she ends up in.
Also, I think I'm the only person who likes the rape-alleys of Gunpo. I find them very charming and mysterious even though they smell like paint. |

Suwon is a self-contained city, though. You can get everything you need without leaving. Uiwang is just a cancerous growth on Anyang (the area near Lotte Mart is nice but southern Uiwang is the pits). |

Bundang. Very good living conditions for Korea. Nice parks, good shopping and restaurants and not far from Seoul. |
