Hey all,
I'm looking for any help from people who have been to Xinjiang (Urumqi, Kashgar, Turpan, Karakul Lake). My wife and I are planning a long walk next summer - fly into Urumqi, then walk to Kashgar (or opposite direction, depending on advice). We'll have about 5 weeks to cover the 1500-odd kilometers. For any who've been there - is this possible, road-wise? Amenities-wise? Can we camp? Weather at this time (July and August)?
I've already done a lot of research, now I just want some first-hand testimonials and anecdotes.
Much obliged. |

A friend of mine did just that last summer. He loved it and said it was amazing. I saw his pictures, they were great. He went with a Chinese girl though, so that helped them a lot in getting to places that would have been otherwise impossible. |

I've been to Urumqi only so I can't say exactly, but summer temperatures are fine for this type of thing, and the sun will go down at maybe around 8-9pm. Also keep in mind that Xinjiang's terrain is very mountainous so walking the whole way can prove to be difficult (if that's what you were planning to do). But if you're down for that, I say go for it!
I'd recommend asking people on LonelyPlanet's internet forum for advice too |
