I am currently working in Japan. I used to work in South Korea, in a hagwon, which wasn't too bad as hagwons go, although at times it was difficult. When I lived in Korea, other teachers suggested I get a job in a Korean public school, because things would be more straightforward,
I have been teaching in Japan now for 11 months. I feel I am settling in now, but I am reluctantly thinking of a return to Korea. IN the public sector
The main reason is money. In Korea, things were cheaper, and I didn't have to pay rent. That makes a BIG difference.

In Japan, you often have to pay hefty deposits on top of your rent, and now that that's solved, I find it is too easy to waste money doing things that are usually cheap. So I am nearly broke. In my school I do a lot of commuting, and I remember that in Korea most people didn'T. Here I get some holidays, and the job looks stable, but can I afford to live?

Is it possible to still save money if you work in a Korean public school? Do they pay for your apartment?[/b] Question

Yup. They do offer housing. Or you can usually get 300,000 or so (that's not much, so you're better-off taking their studio or whatever they give you).

You can save 500,000 to 1 million won per month here, on average, if you don't spend/buy a lot.

Transportation is generally inexpensive compared to Japan.

You may find that you need to travel back home for a consulate interview now, however.
