so I signed up w/KT for a wireless connection, saying I wanted to use it also when I traveled around K - which I do from time to time. I said I use the train a lot, can I use it on the train - the service rep said she thought so. I said where all will I be able to use it? and she said most everywhere there is a wireless connection -w hich was my understanding

so I go to Kangwon do province last week and can't get a connection on the train. then I use it in a restaurant and the connection is somewhat flaky.

then I go to Jeonju and to an outlying community, Jungin and no internet. Inside Jeonju, it's ok but my friends live in Jungin and I want to be able to use it there for when I visit them. They have an internet in their home so I'm thinking it should be good for me too on my nb.

I call KT today and ask to speak to a technician about this. He tells me I can ONLY connect where KT has this little "Nespot" deal going on which is what I'm suppose to connect to. He said there is indeed, wireless in Jungin but it's with ANOTHER company and KT can't allow me to connect to another company's wireless!!

I'm like - huh? wtf?? isn't that what people do elsewhere? or am I mistaken?

he also said, there's NO wireless on trains, period. WTF ??!! why not? why can't I use my computer on the train for goodness sake? heaven forbid I should actually do something besides (1) sleep or (2) talk on a cell phone!!

am I mistaken about what wireless is or is supposed to be? is this unreasonable? I thought as long as there was a connection available, my computer was supposed to be able to access it. Also this is my first wireless experience so I don't have anywhere else to compare it to - I'd appreciate hearing other people with experience here and in other countries share what can and cannot be expected.

you got the wrong type of wireless connection. you need to get the KT Wibro ( HSPA/EVDO ).

LOL!

What are you talking about? I mean seriously, do you know what you bought? Reading your post reminds me of a caveman banging the top of a television set.

Did you buy an aircard that connects to mobile phone towers or did you sign up for some type of wifi service? If you signed up for a wifi service, the reason why you can't connect on a moving train is because there are no internet cables attached to moving trains to broadcast a wifi signal. Mainly because they are moving.

well I'm happy you can add visuals to my question - Rolling Eyes

I signed up for wireless through KT - they say it's called the "Nespot" which means that's what I'm connecting to -

as for aircard - do you mean airport card? - this is a macbook pro and it has every possible connection that I would need built in except for the old-fashioned dial up modem kind - which means the airport thingy is in there too - but I don't understand much about it - which is WHY I'm posting and hoping for answers, not disparagement, ok?! Shocked

hi moosehead,

the airport card only connects to wireless routers. when you signed up for nespot, you only have access to wifi routers. If you sign up for KT wibro, you have to buy a separate kind of modem. These are like the high speed wireless chips found in the newer cellphones. instead of connecting to a router, it will connect to the telecom cell network. the range is far greater than wifi networks which usually have a shorter range of 10-20 meters. So you can have internet access pretty much anywhere there is a cell tower that supports high speed protocals ( Wibro/HSPA/EVDO ).

if you decide to get connected with Wibro, you must buy one of these modems to connect to your macbook.

if your only using OS X on your macbook pro, you might have some difficulties with driver support. But if you are using bootcamp with XP/Vista installed, the proper drivers are available.

another alternative is to use a 3G or broadband phone and connect via bluetooth/USB. you just need to install the right software and you should be able to connect to the internet. Make sure you get the correct Data plan, or you could end up with $85,000 bill

Hmmm...my iPod Touch connects pretty much anywhere I am in Korea (other than at my school). On the bus, subway, gym, out here in rural Suwon even. I think it's Wifi, not WiBro, unless Apple has some kinda deal with the Wireless providers. Dunno. I don't pay anything extra for Nespot, but see it's one of my Wifi automatic connections.

there is no wifi in the subways. only wibro.

I also have an ipod touch and it's impossible to get any connection on the move and especially in the countryside. if you can connect to nespot hotspots, it requires login to access the internet. i've tried numerous times and was unsuccessful for free access.

apple does not have any partnerships with wireless providers at this moment. they are in talks with KT to bring the the 3G iphone here.

I just called KT again and asked about Wibro - I was told I had to call a different number for KT Wibro! go figure - KT won't even tell you about it unless you ask specifically!

so I called this number - 080-000-1472 and was eventually connected to an E speaker - she told me later if I called 02-2190-1180 there were E speakers there - anyway - I asked about Wibro for my nb and she says it's only in 2 cities, Seoul and another one I couldn't understand the name -

I said, is it different for cell phones then from computers? and she said, yes, it is - it's a different connection for computers. I said I thought if I bought a little device for my computer then I could use the Wibro everywhere and she said, no that's not correct.

If I understand what some of you on here said - that's not true either?

So is the KT Wibro service maybe not the one to call?

If you have Wibro on your computer - and have in fact, used it while traveling, that is, in rural areas, etc. what service are you using?

this also from a Wibro website:

http://www.wibro.or.kr/new/overview02.jsp

Quote:
Mobile TPS for Personal Broadband

- WiBro is a mobile TPS (Media+Communication+Data) based personal Internet service that allows users to use media, communication and data simultaneously anywhere and anytime even while moving in a vehicle at a very high transmission speed of approximately 1Mbps.

which makes sense to me - I mean - if you have service from Point A to Point B and everywhere in between - why shouldn't you have service while moving from Point A to Point B?

well, they will probably will expand to most areas of korea in the near future. i guess it would be too expensive to cover the rural areas for now.

this is probably what your looking for...

works on bus, subway, trains, parks, mountain side, secluded places, neighbor's bathroom, inside your pants, etc

Gee, my Touch must be lying to me--as I have 2 carriers I generally get signals from as I'm surfing the net on my touch--nespot & nio. I take the bus from Suwon to Gangnam Station several times a week, and have continuous internet access. wifo, wibo, wifo, whatever they call it, I'm getting internet access. And I've never been asked for a P/W in any way.
Also ride the Bundang line, and have internet there too.

some information you should know.

Easy access to Internet and content services even on the move.
Moderate price compared to mobile communication services.
Immediate access to services upon payment.

NESPOT ID Only allows you to use high-speed wireless Internet services in Hot Spot locations provided by KT with one ID

if your uncertain about the technology/services you are using, please refrain from making statements. the proper way to address your confusion is to ask questions. people will be more receptive to you and be more willing to help resolve your misunderstandings.

Hey, all I know is I am connected to the internet well over 90% of the time I want to be. I've never been prompted for an ID of any sort from my Touch. Try as you might, your cutting and pasting articles probably won't cause my Touch to disconnect from the interweb.

more information a person can provide will benefit those who are willing to comprehend. i am not targeting this information only to you, but to all those who seek answers pertaining to this problem. i understand that my cutting and pasting of articles ( from the actual company that provides that service ) may hurt your credibility, but my intentions are only for the good of knowledge. so please don't take things so personally.

have a great day Smile

Seems you're the one upset that someone gets Wifi wherever they go, then you say people who don't know the inards of the technology shouldn't post on the subject. Well, I don't need to know what 803.21234g or whatever technology I have to understand when I am connected to the interweb. If I click a URL, and it goes there, I think I'm connected.
