|
|
I'm a tightwad so I don't really want to pay for anything. Is there anywhere I can get GOOD anti-virus and anti-spyware software. I know you get what you pay for, but still... any advice?? I had a year's free trial with some program called CA (I think) but that's finished now. |

Lots of people use AVG for their anti-virus, it's free.
For anti-spyware, Spybot and Ad-Aware are quite popular. |

Isn't amusing how people never read OPs but somehow find the time to reply? NOD32 isn't free.
Anyways, AVG is a good and free anti-virus. And SpyBot S&D is good free anti-spyware. I would bother with the proactive defense part of that; it's more of a pain in the @ss than helpful. |

http://www.avast.com/cnt/download-avast-home.html
The Home version is free, and works very well. I've used it on multiple computers for years. I tried AVG, but the interface sux, and it doesn't clean every virus off unless you go back to the main site and download certain cleaner programs -- a huge minus.
AVAST doesn't do a scan as quickly, but it is memory-resident, and finds most stuff on its own. It also cleans viruses on its own. |

I installed AVG but it seems to make my computer crash when I do a scan.
I'll try the one bassexpander recommended. |

i prefer avast to avg but i haven't used either for a few years. a couple of years ago spybot search and destroy and adaware were considered good free anti spyware. nowadays that don't rate that well against the competition. I still use both of them. I would recommend either buying or illegally a top rated antivirus program. check out www.cnet.com for reviews. |

There is a option on AVG after install, to run using only a little memory.
A common problem seems to be that after a few runs, it reverts back to using lots of memory and stalls the PC or at least stops you doing anything while runs.
It's a right pain. |

That's a setting you can change. By default, it's set to scan the PC like every time you turn on your computer. You can change that to whenever you want. |

On top of the spyware-removal software, I recommend some spyware prevention. Get SpywareBlaster (do a Google search). The free version requires you click the update button once in a while yourself instead of automatically, but it's worth it. |

I think Avast is far superior to AVG, having used both. Although, Avast can be annoying when the sirens go off when it detects a virus. Also upon start up it says that it's been updated... Despite this, very good free software. For a non free program, I use Bit Dfender Total Security. It's awesome! |

Also, unlimited number of free 30 day trials. I rest my case. |
