Anyone able to recommend a decent, affordable (less than 9,000 yen) hotel in a convenient visa run location? Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Your budget seems to be bigger than mine was when I went, but I definitely recommend this place:

The cheapest place you'll find to stay in Fukuoka, I believe, and awfully friendly to boot. It's convenient - a 15 minute walk from Hakata station, which is a major subway and bus station. I know you said hotel and not hostel, but if you want to save some money and meet some great people, I really recommend this place.

If you haven't already booked plane tickets, do the Kangsan Travel visa run package, which includes a round trip on the ferry from Busan and one night in a hotel. I did that a year and a half ago and it was a good value (and kind of fun). You'll stay in the Central Hotel (or Hotel Central), which is clean, pleasant, and conveniently located a block from the subway and next to an upscale supermarket.

Actually, most of the non-major hotels will have rooms for less than Y9,000. The Fukuoka-Now link posted above is a good resource. I lived in Fukuoka for over 6 years so if you have any specific questions, just ask.

Another vote for the Khaosan Fukuoka hostel. You don't have to stay in dorms. I stayed in a private room, with aircon, for around 3,500 yen, last September.

The Comfort hotel or Comfort Inn in the states was 6,000 yen last year
and you get free breakfast. It is also right arcoss the
street from Hakata station. The single rooms are small but fine for a couple.

Note: I didn't find Japan that expensive, only the taxis.
