So, about every month I take the side of my computer and give it a good blast with air to get all the dust that get trapped in there, also I go around with a damp cotton bud and try to clean around the fans in my case that cover the CPU and graphics card......

However I'm building a new computer this weekend and I was wonder what precautions I can take again the fine dust particles that have settled all over my old computer of 2 and a half years? They won't budge with compressed air and the only way it seems feasible to actually clean it off would to be wash it with water!!!!

Obviously I don't want to do this!! So what preventions can I take against the fine dust whit accumulates in my case, any kind of air like coffee filters I can buy to put over the fans in my case for my new computer???

Have you tried a filament brush?

Filter gauze is available in some stores in Yongsan.

A spray can of CFC's was considered perfect for this, some decades ago. It was a good solvent, did not erode the electronic parts and evaporated away. However we now know that evaporation was not harmless.....

Isopropyl rubbing alcohol (99%). the alcohol doesn't have any impurities that water has. it also dries very fast, and won't have any effect on the electronics.

application uses:

* It will allegedly remove silly putty from textiles and pine resin from most materials.
* Due to its volatile nature, it can help to evaporate liquids.
* It helps to separate glue from bonded objects.
* It will remove thermal grease from computer processor heatsinks
* It can be used to clean the optical surface of CDs and DVDs.
* It can be used to extract soluble chemicals from an insoluble matrix; the appropriate steps are mixing, maceration, filtration, and evaporation.
* It can be used as a fuel in some engines.
* It can be used as a do-it-yourself cleaner for guitar/bass guitar strings in order to enhance their life
* It removes shoe polish.
* It is the preferred cleaner for LCD monitors
* Due to its rapid evaporation, it can be used to clean electronics or other devices that become damaged when wet
* Head cleaner for audio and video tape players.
* Can be used to erase permanent ink off most surfaces.
* Can be used to clean halogen bulbs

if it can do all that, i'm pretty sure it can remove the caked particles.

Yea it will do, but as i'm building a new computer I'm trying to prevent any build up of particles in the first place.

Anyway is rubbing alcohol easy to get here? From the drug store? (I need some to clean my processor and heat sink before I apply themal paste)

120 mm

90 mm

60mm

these should help prevent dust from getting in your case. put one on every fan. when dirty, just wash with soap and they are good as new.

The problem I found with those filters is they greatly reduce air flow. This of course raises case temps and additionally they act as insulators, compunding the problem.

One must use more powerful fans to circumvent these problems, and doing so makes the PC quite noisy. They will keep thigs clean, but the tradeoff isn't worth it, IMO.

Cheers they look really good, if I clean them often air flow shouldn't be a problem, I just need to find one for the huge fan on my antec 900 case!!!

i wouldn't be too worried about the big 200mm fan on top of the antec 900. the hot air is blowing out. the dust usually gets in from the side or front fans of a case. nice case BTW.

I got some alcohol today from the drug store but it's only 78% pure, will this be good enough?

I just asked for ethanol, and got the 78% stuff the guy in the drug store had nothing stronger, as for it being denatured I'll have to ask my wife....
