I am looking for some solid, nearly risk-free, short term investments in Korea. Not equities, I have a trading account but this money is for short term goals.

Right now I keep most of my savings in a savings account at Standard Chartered at a rate of 4.9%. Any sugestions?

For short term risk free investments, you're not going to get much better than 4.9%. You'll have to up your risk if you want a better return.

What is your definition of short term?

Also, what do you invest in currently? It's hard to gauge what your definition of low risk is.

From my viewpoint, it seems you want a near guaranteed return higher than 4.9%.

I invest in various global funds and a few securities through Zecco.

My short term is basically savings for adownpayment on a house in 3 years.

I will be in Korea or 10 more months, so I can only invest in a Korean investment for that amount of time.

I guess what I'm after is a diiferent saving product or low risk fund or MMF in Korea that somone has found with a better rate

Could be a dangerous thing to do. Opened up limit down and closed positive for the day. People have been saying that about oil since $40.

I respect that it could be a good play....

...but its about exactly the opposite of what I'm looking to do. I'm looking for a short term, low risk investment. Wink

I have money in an MMF that has returned 5.05% in the past year. The rate is variable, though.

From what I can see, the best performing MMF in the past year is 프런티어신종MMF 1(법인). You can get it at places like Woori Investments & Securities. It's returned 5.40% in the past year. Of course, it's not guaranteed to do that in the coming year.

In terms of 3 year return, the best performing MMF has been 농협CA법인MMF 8. It's returned 16.67% in the past 3 years and 5.21% in the past year.

There's stuff out there but you won't get much better than 4.9% and it's not guaranteed either. With the MMF that I hold, I could earn as little as 4% but it's been performing quite well recently. Glad I didn't move my money to a CMA.

Thanks Victorology.

How liquid is your MMF? Can you move your money in and out easily and penalty free? I have never actually owned an MMF.

Afghanistan has some good agricultural products I understand. Demand is growing, and once you get hooked you can't stop.

Yes, you can move your money in and out without penalty but not as freely as you can with a CMA. You have to make your transactions during business hours and funds either get posted or become available within one business day.

Hog bellies. It's a no-brainer. With samgyupsal restaurants spreading like wildfire throughout the korean penninsula, there is no way to lose.
