so I went to break out the old discman the other day, was going for a walk and wanted some music to listen to, but it seems to have stopped working. I'm one of those people that still haven't managed to get my hands on an mp3/psp/insert random acronym of choice. anyway, my question is, are these things still sold anymore? if not, what are my basic music-through-headphones options? I don't need anything that I can check my email on or direct an orchestra from, y'know, just something simple...and cheap...like me...

If you don't mind it only being able to hold 3 hours of music you can get a 256mb mp3 player really cheap these days. Yongsan, internet, etc.

I bought a used yellow Panasonic Discman at the flea market area (Dongdaemun) of Seoul on '06. Scuffed up but works great for 10,000 won. I use new earphones though, of course. Plenty were there to choose from. Just wander around that part and keep your eyes open.

Oh,... and I also picked up a Sony Walkman, given all those cheap tapes being sold in this country, with contemporary American pop and rock compilations (like the 2008 Grammy nominations tape). real old technology, still works great. Auto shut off at end of tape means I can go to sleep listening to tunes and it shuts itself off, a nice feature. Low tech can be most apt sometimes.

I bought one, too, in Yongsan in '96...then I got home and opened the box to find a Farasonic Discman inside. Went back to get my money back and got the "Who are you?" response. Rolling Eyes
