Plan to Name 1st Female Defense Spokesperson Dropped
The Defense Ministry on Wednesday withdrew a plan to name a female spokesperson, in the face of scything public criticism of its candidates pro-U.S. views.
Song Young-sun is noted for her pro-U.S. views, having said that U.S. interests coincide with South Korea's and calling for an unconditional dispatch of troops to Iraq. She also suggested the government should send credit defaulters to Iraq as peacekeeping forces in a recent seminar.
The ministrys homepage was flooded with protesting comments after the news of her appointment was released.

I think she wasn't tapped, because she wasn't in the military. (I should read the article again.) The rules state that only military personal can fill that position, and that is why she was dropped. It is c r a p p y but, I can understand in this case. |

Lt. Gen. Cha Young-koo, deputy defense minister for policy, said the ministry suspended its plan to revise regulations so as to enable Song Young-sun, a civilian, to become its spokesperson.
Cha said the ministry will appoint Col. Nam Dae-yon, who will be promoted to an Army brigade general next month, as new spokesperson.
Cha added that the ministry will nevertheless revise regulations to open the public relations post to civilians. |
