For one of the larger Pacific Island nations PLUS a 37.1% of the population is of European blood.. its surprising how international exposure to the island-nation is almost non-existant.
I'm guessing those from NZ/OZ have a much stronger sense of it.. but internationally the place is nearly non-existant. |

Prolly because physically the place is nearly non-existent. It's really small, eh.

Yeah.. but with 37% of the people being of European heritage..
I mean, places like The Netherlands are small.. Fiji is small.. Singapore is small.. but most people know most things about those places.
New Caledonia compared to its Pacific neighbors.. it actually seems to be a decent size as well..
Better with this map:

I've thought about that too, but here's another one:

Five times the population of New Caledonia, lots of Europeans, Chinese and Indians, plus a university. |

I met a guy in HK once who called himself a Frenchman but actually came from New Caledonia. That's all I know. Apparently it's nice. |

They seem to like sports.
I got this picture a couple of weeks ago at the Ironman Triathlon held here on Jeju...
Patrick Vernay of New Caledonia crosses the finish line after stopping on the red carpet to give his mom a hug. After seeing the amount of sweat on the man, I'm not so sure she was real pleased about that.
Last year at the Ironman Final Event in Hawaii he got 15th place, and this was his second year in a row to win on Jeju.
PS I'm not sure what the official language of New Caledonia is, but his family spoke French as a first language. |

Had a mate a while back spend a year teaching English in New Cal. It's a fantastic place with high pay but the local prices for food and what not are apparently pretty steep. |

I'm probably wrong, but the issue may be that they are a predominantly french speaking country, surronded by english speaking states. They tend to be more tied towards France than promoting themselves to thier neighbors. It is a beautiful country, and well worth a visit. Their tourism is probably also aimed more for the French tourists than English speaking ones from America, making it less well known than Fiji. |

I'm just flabbergasted that this thread wasn't started by Mith.
That said, I'm glad you brought New Cali to my attention, and I will put it on my list of places to visit. It will sit in the #2 spot, right behind Suriname. |
