Thanks Hillary

Clinton Cuts a Commercial for John McCain Fri Feb 29, 1:17 PM ET

The Nation -- It is November, 2008. Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama are locked in a tight contest for the presidency.

In the closing days before the election, a new campaign commercial begins to air nationwide.

"In a few days, you, the American people will choose the next president of the United States," begins the distinguished senior senator from Arizona. "As someone who has served this country in combat and in the Congress for the past quarter century, I believe that the first responsibility of the president is to protect the American people. I believe I am best prepared to do that. What of my opponent? Barack Obama is a good man, an inspiring man. But, my friends, I ask you to consider this commercial that was put together not by my campaign but by the campaign of Hillary Clinton just a few months ago.

On the screen comes a Clinton campaign commercial that aired before the March 4 primaries in Texas and Ohio that features images of children sleeping peacefully as a soothing male voice says, "It's 3 am and your children are safe and asleep. But there's a phone in the White House and it's ringing. Something's happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call. Whether it's someone who already knows the world's leaders, knows the military -- someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world. It's 3 am and your children are safe and asleep. Who do you want answering the phone?"

An image of Clinton holding a phone appears on the screen.

Again comes the voice of the Republican nominee: "I'm John McCain and I approve this commercial, just as United States Senator Hillary Clinton did earlier this year. I respect Barack Obama, but I believe Hillary Clinton was right to ask: 'Who do you want answering the phone?' And I am want to tell you that I am prepared to answer that phone and to protect you. God bless you, and God bless America."

What an ingenuous tactic: use the liberal rhetoric against itself.

It reminds me of the propoganda film series, "Why We Fight," for the American military staged by the great director Frank Capra in which he used the enemy's own propoganda against them.

Thanks for sharing.

Bet ya don't get a liberal response, though, unless it's flippant.

This is a silly thread. Please tell me in which campaign season the opposing party hasn't used the same arguments against a nominee that the nominee's competitors in his own party didn't use before the convention.

This ad is simply posing the question of preparedness: Is Obama ready (experienced enough) to be president? He has to convincingly answer Clinton, because anyone with an ounce of political sense knows he's going to have to answer McCain.

It's a fair question.

How to Beat Obama (Maybe)

Republicans owe Hillary our gratitude. She has road-tested several versions of attacks on Obama that don't work. Obviously, and first, don't come out against change and hope -- the perennial themes of successful election campaigns.

Man, I am so looking forward to the massive cranial explosions that take place when the Republicans successfully paint Obama as a liberal Democrat and then lose to him in November. Badly.

No doubt we'll get to hear all about what a terrible candidate McCain was. Conservatism can never fail, it can only be failed. Rolling Eyes

Liberal democrats have never beaten a Republcan by a wide margin. Not since 1950 anyway. I don't think Roosevelt was a liberal so I bet it would go back further than that.

Even Bill Clinton a moderate democrat owes part of his margin of victory in 1992 to Ross Perot.

If Obama wins it will be because the Republicans do not successfuly paint him as a liberal democrat. If the Republicans sucessfully paint him as a liberal democrat then they will win.

LBJ was a dedicated cold warrior. Left wingers hated him

He may have been liberal in other ways but not on foreign policy.

FDR was also strong on national defense.

They weren't liberals on foreign policy like Jimmy Carter was.
