I know Tokyo is probably better, but it's more expensive. So, is Tokyo that much better? Is Tokyo fun during New Year's?

I would like opinions from people who have been to the both places. I want to see Tokyo, but I also want to see Kyoto and Hiroshima.

Does the price make Tokyo slightly less attractive, or is the price worth it?

You won't go wrong either way but you'll get a experience a more traditional Japanese New Year a bit easier by hitting up Kyoto with lots of temples within easy reach of each other. Do the Japanese thing and hit up three temples on New Year's Day and get your fortune and charms. Eat an ichigo daifuku. Go to Spaworld in Osaka or another hot spring/onsen and soak the day away. Osaka is the so-called belly of Japan so eat something new every day.

Hiroshima is also closer to Osaka.

I prefer Osaka. It's closer (neighbor) to Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe and within reach of Hiroshima. The nightlife is more fun and cheaper. The downtown areas are dirtier and seedier.

Tokyo has more culture and museums...but will you really go to many museums on your vacay?

Osaka also has Okonomiyaki. I love that stuff.

I prefer Osaka, by a long shot.

Tokyo is lame after 1am. It is an amazing city during the daytime, but kinda disappointing after the last train stops. The taxis are way too expensive, and the distances you gotta travel in Tokyo are way too far. So, basically everyone goes back home before or well-before the last train.

Some people hangout in Roppongi though until the first train starts back up again. But Itaewon is more interesting than Ropongi late at night.

During the daytime though, everything in Tokyo blows away everything in Seoul...Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe/Nara though (KANSAI) offers quite a punch too though.

I'd say if nighttime is a consideration, you might enjoy Osaka more. Daytime, you can't go wrong with either Tokyo or Osaka, just depends on what you want to do and see exactly.

I will be going to Tokyo this winter. Never been, so I don't know. But I can tell you about Osaka!

Osaka is definitely worth going to visit. So much so, that I considered just going there again and skipping on Tokyo. But alas, I have to try new places and do new things. Osaka is a vibrant, fun, and very big city. It is (as another poster mentioned) very near Kyoto (i remember it was very fast and cheap to get there...) which is an amazing place in itself. I think with Osaka, you kind of get a 2-for-1 deal. You get the giant, awesome BIG city Osaka, but then you also get the quaint temple-filled Kyoto with nice gardens, history, etc. There is really lots to do on the Osaka trip. So I'd say, go with that choice! Save Tokyo for round two, like I did. I researched heavily into Tokyo, and while it looks cool and all, part of me still kind of wishes I were just going back to Osaka and Kyoto one more time... Very Happy

If you go to Osaka then you MUST spend time in Kyoto. I enjoyed Kyoto much more than Osaka. The problem is that you're going in Winter and I'm not sure if thats a good time to see all of the historic sites. Tokyo is fun too. I say if you have the chance to go to Japan again when the whether is nicer OR if you dont have many days, go to Tokyo. There's so much to see in Kyoto and the Kansai region - I was there for about 10 days and I still feel like I just scratched the surface!

Winter is a great time to see the sites in Kyoto. Less crowds and it is not too cold there.
