Please, please, please ... One more time, to my fellow English "teachers": the abbreviated form of "you are" is "you're"; it is not "your".

And plurals are not formed by adding an apostrophe and the letter "s".

1. It's a clever dog that catches its own fleas.

2. Not all dogs are clever.

3. You're a lucky man if your wife loves you.

From me, through you, to your students. Free of charge.

Once again, pedant, judging English spelling or usage mistakes on a message board smacks of having nothing else to contribute. You're a misogynist and a troll, and a general waste of time.

I hope your ready to check all you're post's twice, Mr. Dokdo, because youve officially forfeited the right to make even a single grammar mistake or typo on this board.

ps-- does anybody else get the feeling that this is the sort of guy who uses a lot of "air quotes"?

Especially on the phone, what's up with that?

He's the sort of guy that read that really annoying book by Lynn Truss (Eats, Shoots and Leaves.) and now thinks he's a bit brighter than everyone else as a result.

To be fair though, he's right, there are some shocking examples of borderline illiteracy on this board.

That is an improper use of an ellipses. An Ellipses is used for the omission of quoted materials, not as a comma or semicolon.

Further, my guess is you were taught your grammar somewhere in the commonwealth, and more than a decade or so ago, as you place your commas and periods outside of the quotation marks. It is popularly argued that the standard has become that they are placed inside.

The Blue Book of Grammar and Punctuation, under Quotation Marks: Rule 1 says, "Periods and commas always go inside quotation marks, even inside single quotes."

Still, forums are for fun and information. Who really cares if someone's grammar is spotty in a quick post? It's no big thing.

You are assuming that the posters that write your vs. you're so not understand what they are writing. This is a false assumption as most people when typing in a forum setting such as this are typing phonetically as opposed to grammatically.

Technically speaking your is an abbreviation of the contraction you're, it is just not an officially recognized abbreviation. Since language and its accepted rules are ever changing this too may become accepted.

Bottom line is that your OP has little substance and reveals a little about what kind of trivial things keep you awake at night.

Peace.

I agree with your first paragraph but I'm not sure I agree with your second paragraph. What you are saying in essence is that every common bad habit in English is acceptable because at some time in the future it may become officially recognised. The possessive adjective Your is not an acceptable abbreviation of you're; it's a mistake/slip (that's not to say it's an important mistake; it isn't, which is your point, to be fair.) I think the point is that it doesn't matter, which I agree with.

God, I'm so confused.
