Anyone else working a split shift and interested in doing some bike riding on the Han river or it's tributaries? 12-5pm on weekdays is a great time to dodge the crowds. Just seeing if there's any interest.

I caught pneumonia one year doing that.

No joke. Right along the Han.

Were you smoking a pack a day while riding around wearing only a banana hammock?

Seriously though I'll see how my lungs feel and do a little research into the infamous yellow dust. I say it's the yellow snow you have to look out for.

That happened to me after my first winter of riding in Korea too. But the weather is getting a bit warmer now, so the main thing to worry about would be the yellow dust.

If the link below works you'll be able to see a map of bikepaths along both the Han river and it's tributaries. Yangjaecheon is especially nice.

Thanks guys I'll grab a mask. I've seen that map before. Do you guys know of any maps showing other rider friendly paved paths/roads around korea? I've been looking but most the material is for mountain biking.

If you go to one of the big book shops like Kyobo you might be able to find this.

It has maps for commuting, cycle-touring, exercise and "trails with thrill" across the whole country.

Look out for that yellow dust. That stuff is nasty.

Also beware of ajosshis riding $13,000 MTBs. They must own the bike paths here because they ride in any and all lanes.

Thanks kiwiduncan
I'm going to check out Kyobo today anyway. I can muddle my way through Hangul but my understanding is crap. Would you still recommend it for someone with almost no understanding of Korean?

I haven't actually seen it in the flesh, I just read about it in a magazine. I imagine the book has lots of maps and photos so as long as you can read a few place names and so on it shouldn't be a problem. It'll make for good, practical Korean reading practice too.

You might find this thread useful.

Also, does anyone know of any Korean-based bloggers who have lots of detail about biking, Korean travel and so on? I remember meeting a guy a few years ago who was a fluent Korean speaker and was quite heavily involved in the Korean critical mass events and other biking campaigns. Does "Orancky" sound familiar to anyone?

I got the book. It's great. It has a hundred odd maps about 50/50 road and MTB maps with 3 or 4 pictures each. It definently shows a lot of bike paths I didn't realize existed in and around Seoul. I'm not sure I can find all these in Hangul but I'll try to get some photos of my own up from my trips. I'm thinking of doing a long ride from Seoul to the Coast and then down to Busan next fall and, sure enough, there's a route in here.
