Bit disappointed that the Polish film, KATYN, didn't win for Best Foreign film at the Oscars. It's not flawless but it will knock your socks off.
In 1943, Joseph Goebbels(of all f***ing people) invited the International Red Cross to investigate a site in the Katyn Forest to verify that the bodies of murdered Polish officers had been victims of a crime perpetrated by the NKVD. Nonetheless, although some observers thought it was a valid claim, it was largely hushed up. For many years afterward, many in the West(you know...the "progressives" and their ilk) continued to buy the line that the Nazis had killed the officers.
In the dying days of the Soviet Union, Gorby ordered the NKVD files to be opened. Guess what? The proof was in the pudding: Stalin had ordered the executions. Apologies from the scoffers? Not on your life.
It's reminiscent of when Robert Conquest's THE GREAT TERROR came out. Of course the Kremlin denounced it but their scorn was almost benign when compared to the abuse heaped upon him by Western leftist academics. Has Conquest ever received an apology from the doubters? Not to my knowledge.
See this movie, folks. |
