This seems strange: my school applied for and received a visa confirmation number for me in December, before the 15th, without having to do a criminal record check and/or blood test. I didn't get the actual visa until January, I went to Japan and applied and received it. Now, a month and a half after I got the visa, they're taking me to get a blood test. Is this happening to anyone else? |

Are you sure the test is for your visa and not routine? At my school (public), ALL the teachers get a yearly physical and blood test. |

It's not a public school so I don't know. I asked if it was the government doing it and they said it's for legal reasons. |

Do you have your ARC yet? If not you might find that the blood test is part of the "Health Check" that seems to happen under the new system between getting the visa and getting the ARC ... I am in the middle of the new process at the moment ... Or rather have just started the new process and I know that I will have to have a health check including the blood test after I arrive in Korea before I can get the ARC. |

Your understanding of the situation is laughable. First off, the blood tests are insulting and racist due to the obvious implication that Westerners are STD carrying degenerates. Secondly, the OP isn't bitching about it, he's merely asking why he's getting it done. The strongest word he uses is "strange" to describe the situation. He doesn't bash his employer or anything. All he said was that he thought he made it by the deadline and wouldn't have to bother with it and now he does, so he's curious.
Perhaps you should sign up for a Reading Comprehension class. I think they offer that sort of stuff at Pagoda and YBM. |

So is it just a blood test or is it a full physical? What else do you have to do? |

By the sounds of it, your school is just going based on what they perceive the new regulations to be. If they applied for your visa before December 10th, although it could be the 15th, but I seem to recollect the 10th being the date, then you shouldn't have to do any of the tests.
Do you have your ARC yet? If so, you don't need to get the tests, and therefore the tests they are asking for could be a full physical, or pretty much anything, as they aren't required by immigration.
Although, if you don't have your ARC yet, and it is in fact the immigration regulations being implemented, then what they require are 3 tests, 1 for AIDS/HIV, 1 for cannabis, and the other which I am led to believe is another drug test, although I have heard that they are also checking to see if you are an alcoholic. Hope this helps. |

The final cut off is 15th march 2008 after that they will be enforcing the full new laws for every tom, dic and harry.
I spent 4 hours listening to a government official spill that crap in Wonju. |

This is true for people in Korea currently on E2 visas. Those that were not in Korea applying for a new visa have had to get the background checks and medical since December. |

For anyone who's curious, they give you a blood and urine test, take your blood pressure and heart rate, test your hearing and vision, take a chest x-ray, and measure and weigh you. |

I had to take a physical, an FBI check, and drug test to teach in the States. Why is it such a big deal, unless you are hiding something? It is a progressive step in the right direction to teach. Albeit, I don't agree with the sloppiness and haste of the Korean laws. |
