The fans that were supposedly quiet when i bought the parts for my new OSx86 machine, aren't so quiet.
I just moved into a new place and lack a closet to hide the machine in, so it is in my living room. Unfortunately its also pretty loud. There is one large fan - 120mm maybe, a smaller one around 80mm and then the stock intel cpu fan. Lots of fans as I have 4 hard drives in it with plans to add more and want to keep them cool.
Anyways, the quiet fans that i bought are actually noisy Can anyone recommend really really quiet fans, silent would be perfect, that I can replace mine with??
Thanks. |

Not really helpful, but...
- Chipset: If it has a fan, you might want to replace the heatsink to a bigger one (check what Zalman has to offer, I have ZM-NB47J) and have it passively cooled.
- 120mm: This is in PSU, right? Remove the grill(s) in order to lower the "wind" sound. Under-volt the fan in order to lower the RPMs, but remember to follow the temperatures!
- CPU: Get one of the biggest and heaviest copper heatsinks with heatpipes that'll fit inside of your box and slam it in there. Apply thermal paste such as "Arctic Silver 5" to get the best contact between the HS and CPU. If the HS is a good one and you are not overclocking, you might be able to forget the CPU fan altogether. Monitor the temps, thou.
And then there is one option. Water. Look for something like Zalman Reserator set. I know that it is ugly, but at least it could take care of your CPU, chipset and VGA at the same time. Some people have watercooled even their PSUs, but I wouldn't recommend it.
EDIT: Mabe you should check this place.

No, it came in the case I got (on the back) - its a big one.
Thanks for the info. I'll check that site out. I want to try and do it as cheap as possible, its just a media server (that I shouldn't have really bought in the first place, but what's the fun in that??) |

Cool anything you can passively (mobo, maybe psu) and get zalman products advertised as silent. They can be a little more expensive, but they work well and are very quiet. |

Any specific shop you can recommend, or just go and pick a shop?? |

I would go for any 120mm fan by Zalman, Coolermaster, Enermax and the more specialist fan brands like Sycthe or Silverstone.....if they have those. Try to get one with a CFM rating over 40 to make sure it moves enough air.......any fan can be silent if it spins slow enough, but a slow fan won't really cool your case. |
