Is it common that when a couple work for a school, they recieve a decrease in salary? For example, instead of earning 2mil a month each separately, they only earn, say 1.8mil together...??
Also, what is the average starting salary working at a hagwon these days?

I have never heard of that. It sounds like crap.
I thinking starting salary for Hagwon is 2.1 million. |

1) Don't go to a hakwon unless you absolutely have no other employment choices. If you do decide on a hakwon, go with a huge chain in a big city.
2) There should be a premium on hiring a couple, primarily because they can house you in one place, and having a partner here can make the transition more barable. On the other hand, some places don't like to hire couples because if there is a problem with one person, it automatically becomes a problem with two people. Still, you should not be given a salary decrease in any event.
3) If you are ready to make the move, ask for 2.4 EACH PLUS HOUSING. They won't want to pay it, but they will if they are desperate, and many places are. |

My boyfriend and I got hired at a good hagwon in Gangnam. We got our first apt, didn't like it, and they moved us to a 2 bedroom a block away. We also got a high salary for newbies, but that might have been because of our master's degrees (my boyfriend has one, but I was in the process of getting mine), TEFL certification, and previous teaching experience.

Couples should each get paid MORE on average than single people since the school saves money on their housing.
Do not trust anyone to tells you they should get paid less, they are BSing you. |

MollyBloom and hubby need to get out of that hakwon as soon as humanly possible. Apply to university positions for the coming semester. With those credentials, I hope that you are making at least 3.0/month plus housing for the hours you're undoubtably putting in.

Indeed, there is ZERO reason to be in a standard hagwon instead of a uni if you have a masters degree. |

Oh, yes, we finished the job in December. The thing was, it was our first job in Korea, so we were up to working long hours...we did come here to work, after all.
We were asked to come back for over 3.0, but we both wanted to do the university route. Actually, my boyfriend is working for SMOE this year, and I will hopefully return back in September for a uni job! Fingers crossed! |

The thing is, and I am not sure if this makes a difference, but I am still getting my Master's, so I don't technically have it. I guess that for SMOE, you don't get the pay increase unless you already have your diploma. Is this correct?
So, with applying to universities, I hope the fact that I am finishing up my Master's (I will be writing my thesis by 2009, and in Korea<---info in another thread) will still make me a strong candidate. |

| I came to Korea with my BF to work at the same Hagwon. We receive extra money on top of our salary as a "housing allowance." This is because we live together in a one bedroom that would normally house just one teacher. We've found that we have much more bargaining power as a couple since the school would lose not one, but two experienced teachers if they wrong one of us. The school also prefers it because the atmosphere is far friendlier than it was before with three teachers that hated each other! We're leaving soon, we just convinced our boss to give us the severance pay including the housing allowance, since we worked for an extra month without asking for any more money. She immediately agreed. Our salary could've been higher though, as we got 2.1 (plus 150 housing) each and we both have tefl certification, 2 years teaching experience, and I have a teaching degree. No Masters though. |

If you have teaching certification you really should be teaching at an international school not a hagwon.
It's really amazing how many people settle for crappy hagwon jobs when they have some sort of qualifications what could get them something better (not that I should talk, I made the same mistake when I first came to Korea). |
