not at my school. i get school books and am told to work from them (except for special occasions...end of term, before a holiday, etc.), so i know the sentence structures and topics that the kids should understand by the end of class.

When I arrived at my new university job, the textbooks had already been chosen and the syllabi had already been made for all the courses I'm teaching. Each syllabus includes learning goals and objectives.

It's my understanding that I will be responsible for helping to develop the course syllabi for subsequent semesters. Since the curriculum is already somewhat set, however, it won't be like reinventing the wheel.

Let's see.

My uni......

It took them 3 days to get the power on in our new offices (this is my 7th new office). Yesterday the said the internet would be hooked up tomorrow. None today and I'll give you my TV if I have it connected on Mon.

No attendance sheets the first week. They pretty much screwed up everyone's schedules(wrong class times and locations).

This is from one of the top 5 medical unis here.

The office workers here couldn't find kimchi at lunch let alone provide me a list of learning objectives. That's the teacher's job anyways.

They didn't provide any sort of objectives at my PS. Instead, I was expected to submit a semester "Master Plan" in addition to a lesson plan for each class. At first I didn't like the idea, but now I'm so glad I did it, because I can focus my efforts on improving the lessons I've pre-planned.

FWIW, when I arrived I asked what textbooks they were using in their English classes and was told not to use them, since the kids hated them!

The textbook already has that completed, and it's excellent.

Of course, I chose the textbook, so it's sort of all up to me. Smile

No need to reinvent the wheel. I just put a footnote in my syllabus and tell them where to find it.

The actual "objectives" from the school are that we are to teach conversation, reading, listening, and writing. Laughing
