MODS--

Please take a look at the FAQ section--Most of the posts are five years old, and to find any current *relevant* information one has to sift through several pages, and even then we're usually hyperlinked to a newer thread. At the very least you could delete the first 15 pages of a thread that contains mostly dated information, so that the most recent posts are on the first page?

Maybe the search function would perform better as well if you deleted all posts on duplicate (or triplicate, quadruplicate, etc) topics, as well as posts more than three years old. If a poster posts a topic that was just asked last week, delete the thread and direct everyone to the existing thread. Is this really too much to ask?

And if you say "Well, we have some very relevant posts from all those years ago," just wait for the topic to come up again (most likely within a matter of hours) and sticky that. At least then the board will have some semblance of being current.

Hello!

These are good thoughts Easter Clark. I'll make sure they get passed on to the rest of the mod team, and make sure that Dave himself has a chance to look it over. But remember, if you find redundant threads, please notify us about them. Thanks!

Hello again!

We've discussed it at length. Sadly, none of us has the time to complete this task. But we agreed that if you would like to take on the responsibility of updating all of the information on the FAQ page and sending it to us, we'll happily edit the stickies for you. Mods and users working together will make this a great place!

I agree with the OP. Even a year ago, Daves seemed much more "current" than now. Perhaps familiarity does breed contempt, but Daves is no longer a "first option" resource for me.
-The search function is the worst I've ever seen.
-The senseless abuse and contempt drove me away for 6 or 8 months and makes Daves something to use only when necessary.
-The swear filter needs to be fixed, although that's just kind of annoying.
That it's been buggered for so long hints at greater troubles.

Perhaps Dave needs to invite his MODS to a weekend retreat, and hammer out a way to rescue this resource. It's a way of living for him, and a valuable resource for us.

How do we separate the sane, sensible, professionals from the asshats who only come on Daves to vent and spew?
Well, perhaps you could set up a new and invite-only professional forum where the above mentioned people could share ideas without being worried about flame wars, and general idiocy. I don't think it would be that difficult to sort out who to invite and create a password only FORUM. It could be set up as entirely private, or view only without a password.

My depreciated 2 won.

edit - changed thread to forum

Hi Mr Mod.

Do you think Dave could update the forum software?

The phBB is old now and far superior software has now been released that has working search functions and a lot tighter controls to keep trolls and spammers under control.

I don't know if Dave would go along with it, but what about adding a subforum called 'The Pit' or something to that effect, where we split off and send the fights, trolls, and thread-hijacks from normal, well-intended threads? We'd still have to moderate that subforum accordingly, but it would work to help separate the tangent breaks and fighting that steer a thread off of the course intended by the OP.

That would be fantastic! I've seen other forums that have a "Fight Club," where posters having an ego battle have a place to duke it out, leaving the other threads relatively BS-free.

Current phpbb software could allow for only logged in users to see that subforum, so google won't be able to spider it. It's definitely worth discussion and possible pitch to Dave.

The current big boy of the forum software world is vbulletin. http://www.vbulletin.com/

It's not free like phBB $160 for a lifetime user. It has far superior controls for keeping people in check, search functions and mail system.

Has some nice tricks up it's sleave as well. A mute function that lets people post but nobody else gets to see their posts. Keeps the trolls under control. IP logging and monitoring does a lot better job at keeping track of multi nics and people sharing IP's

An auto banning system can be in place for people who overstep the mark too many times. they build up ban points and then are hit with an automatic ban of your choice.

It is the way to go if he can afford $160.

Pitch it to him.

I've asked this before, but there is also no penalties here. Nobody gets banned, and people want quick answers.

Why does the search engine suck balls?
Why don't you sticky relevant materials and ban people if they repost the same crap.

Lets have a noob forum, an entertainment forum.

Seems like anyone just posts whatever the hell they want in General and it turns into flame wars.

Use Google as your search engine. Include elscafe in the search string.

Too much is filtered out of here so as not to upset advertisers, I'd assume.
