Since my original thread suddenly disappeared into the mystery bin I'll try this again. My orignal post had mentioned how much better I feel the quality of English teaching is at my middle school relative to others in our district (I work at a combined middle & high school).
Well I've started teaching my new grade 1 HS classes and the difference between the students who went to our adjoining middle school and those who didn't is unmistakeable. Our academic students had a diagnostic listening test this week and out of the top third, 75% came from our own middle school, even though students from our middle school make up only 50% of our new grade 1s. The middle school that about 40% of our new grade 1s came from is also losing their only good Korean English teacher this year, and if she gets replaced by a non-speaker of English I can only imagine how much more pronounced the difference will be in the future. I don't know how their teachers are for math, science, and Korean, but if I were a parent I'd be very alarmed were I aware of the discrepency.
Those of you have teachers at your school who actually can and do use English in the classroom, and motivate kids to communicate in English, please let them know what a difference they're making and make sure your students know how lucky they are and how appreciative they should be to have them. |

Bum sucker, I'm sorry, but I passed around the answers to your test beforehand, and gave them all little cellphones with morse code capability.
They all cheated. I got a big tupperware bowl of kimchi, some gim, and sundae for helping. Would you like some?
Congrats. |

A tupperware bowl could be useful. I could always get some students to clean out the kimchi.
I met my last grade 1 HS class today, a vocational class. One of my lamest middle school students from last year now has an identical twin sister who went to smalltown girls middle school #2 sitting beside her. I can't even tell which one I taught for the past 2 1/2 years at my middle school and which one I didn't. Unfortunately they seem to share the same attitude and level of interest in English. They couldn't even figure out how to play Battleships or else just weren't interested even in that. |

Don't worry, when I first arrived I thought all Koreans looked the same too. |
