Yes folks, you guessed it, it's time for another post about the grand canal.

The grand canal is facing growing opposition. Rough results of the latest opinion poll carried out by MBC news show

58% oppose the canal
29% support the canal
13% don't know

Unfortunately, members of Lee Myung Park's administration are still arrogantly dismissing the opposition to the canal plans, saying that opponents have hidden political motives or are too uninformed and ignorant to be speaking out.

LMB's people have then gone on to say that, in voting to LMB in the Presidential election, people were signalling their support for the canal. This is despite the fact that there is a great deal of opposition to the grand canal even amongst those who support LMB on his other policies.

So opponents of the canal have organised another protest and candlelight vigil for the 30th of March, just 7 days before the Korean National Assembly elections. The intention is to remind voters that they can demonstrate their opposition to the canal in the polling booths.

The protest will start in front of Seoul Station at 3pm and end at the Central Post Office at 6.30.

If you want to know more about the grand canal and the problems it has then check out this facebook group for information

Gross waste of time in my opinion. LMB and his bunch never had any intention on going forward with that canal thing, they just put it up as their great project kind of as an umbrella issue, to draw the oppositions attention, while they get away with all kinds of other stuff. It also puts the opposition in a bad light for opposing their grand vision, and eventually when they fail to deliver on their economy promises, they can blame it on the opposition to that project too.

I'm sure what would annoy them most is if everybody just jumped on the bandwagon and pushed them to actually build the damn thing, which I'm sure they have never given any serious though to.

I've often wondered this myself, if the canal project is just something to get the public all wound up so that when LMB finally accedes to the will of the people and backs down they'll make him President for Life or something Confused

Is it me or do Koreans misunderstand the whole candlelight vigil thing? Isn't for tragic or emotional issues, like a death or violence against women?

They should just extend Chonggyechong the length of the peninsula and float little cups down it like they do in the sushi restaurants.

The whole thing sounds pretty absurd.

Massive ecological catastrophe.

Allowing the grand canal to be constructed would also be pretty tragic.
