I have heard many foreign women get asked if they are Russian.
I read something funny from an article:

Are you Russian? asked a middle-aged Korean man hopefully to an American English teacher. Translation: are you a prostitute?

Are you Japanese? she retorted. And that was that.

Its the best rebuff Ive heard to the bevy of Korean men who equate blonde hair with instant gratification. But why did it repel him with such shear efficiency? Or, put another way, whats so bad about being called Japanese?

I think the "Are you Japanese?" retort is a very good way to handle it, even though the Korean would probably be allowed to sue you for slander after.

Actually I've been asked if I was Russian once. Not sure what that implies. Dock worker?

Hmmm. My doctor asked me if I was Russian too. Actually assumed . . . she said, "So, was your baby born in Russia or Korea?" "Um, neither." said I. She looked confused . . . as if she was wondering, did she have him on the airplane? Ha ha.
Maybe they treat Russians patients differently. Anyway, a Korean co-worked who recommended the doctor was very offended by the docs question. I thought it was funny, regardles of what was possibly implied. I've had the question from many a man too. I love the response suggested by the OP. I'll try that next time.

In my case, I think when korean man asks western woman "are you Russian?" it in fact means, "Do you want to have a sex?"
Many foreigner woman have problem with his, but some could think like it is a compliment.

A compliment???

Oh yeah, I forgot. This approach is a no fail in Park Min "the gigolo" Su's "How To Sweep A Western Woman Off Her Feet - 101"

Laughing

"Are you Russian?" = "Do you want to have a sex?"

Ahhh, these hopelessly romantic middle-aged Korean men... Great insight.

Good way to earn extra cash too. Given how much Korean men are willing to shell out. Sometimes two million at a room salon I can't understand why more ladies aren't up to it.

I once asked a woman if she was russian in english and she didn't reply, then I asked her in Russian. She talked for an hour. She WAS Russian and told me her Korean husband once punched a guy in the face for asking if she was "available."

"Are you Russian?" isn't always a slur. I used to get asked by shop clerks, a hairdresser, and once in a while, by Russians. That kind of thing was just idle curiosity and didn't much bother me.

It's the random drunk ajoshis that are equating Russian with available, and I found the best response was to simply avoid them, don't make eye contact etc. Seriously, how often do wildly drunk people say anything that isn't inappropriate to the sober people around them?

I met an Uzebki guy who wouldn't believe that I wasn't Russian once. That was strange...
