Thanks garykasparov. I talked to two ft's and they said the job was good, paid pension and on time, they like working there, etc. The only thing is the apartment of the ft I'll be replacing said it was bad, but they'll probably get a new one. How would I go about confirming this before I sign on? I posted my contract and haven't gotten any responses so I'll try posting it here. Thanks in advance for any input.

I currently work for them. There are a number of branches looking for staff at the moment so I don't know which one you are applying for. At my branch, the communication is very good, they are very reliable and the Korean teachers are great. In my experience, they operate above the level of the contract and not to the bare minimum but that's only my experience. I can't speak for everyone. In answer to the following points:

1) What are the hours? ( (1) start time (2) stop time (3) breaks ? )
It varies from branch to branch so get the specifics for the branch you are applying for as what applies to one may not be exactly the same for another. There are also summer and winter sessions when the start and finish times change. This is quite common when the government schools have their vacations but ask about it anyway.

2) How many classes per day, week, month? NOT hour many hours per month. Thirty (30) classroom hours can mean anything from 1350 -1800 minutes per week standing in front of the class. The difference can be up to 7.5 hours in front of the class each week. .
Again, there is some variation depending on individual branch requirements so what is relevant for one may be different for another. The hours are pretty standard for a hagwon though.
My branch is 1350 mins a week in the classroom. Summer and winter sessions add 5 mins per class. On the plus side, the kids are a lot more relaxed and I prefer the extra minutes. I know of others who don't like the extra time though.

3) Do they ALWAYS pay on time?
Yes, and in the case of pay day falling on the weekend or a holiday then it's the working day before. They provide a pay slip.

4) Do they really pay overtime or avoid it with creative book keeping? No = Red Flag
Yes, they pay.

6) Do you get credit for classes on the national holidays or do you get the day off but still have to work your 120 hours before you get overtime?
I haven't heard of any classes on public holidays. Not sure about the second part as I haven't done overtime but haven't heard of any problems from coworkers regarding this. Ask about overtime requirements.

7) Do they have national medical (with the health insurance booklet)? No = Red Flag
Yes and they complete the local education registration requirements.

8 ) Do they pay into pension? No = Red Flag
Yes

9) What about the holidays? 10 or more working days? (legal requirement here) No = Red Flag
10 days but some may be when the school decides. They may have one week off for everyone or a number of extra long weekends and then the rest is yours to take. If your contract says five days this refers to discretionary days and you still get the other five. Something to ask about.

10) When and how do you get your holidays?
Personal vacation time is not available during summer and winter sessions but this may be when there are extra days off at the school's discretion. It's standard to have to work six months before you can take discretionary vacation days. You can take holidays by mutual consent with one month's notice. There aren't the kind of relief teaching agencies here that we're used to in our home countries so it can take a few days to get confirmation while they source a relief teacher. It can be difficult to take personal vacation time around major national holidays as the small available relief pool dries up. (Maybe there's a potential business opportunity here for some enterprising person).

11) What extra stuff do you really have to do? (mentioned or not in the contract)
Again variable. Ask regarding the specific branch you are applying to. Of course there is prep time and most places it's an hour. Depending on the branch, you may have to mark writing and/or write reports every couple of months. There may be occasional, short meetings about once every three months but nothing like the endless weekly meetings some schools insist on. There is a yearly teacher's 'camp' for all teachers, foreign and Korean, which is held during the working week. In spite of reservations from some of us foreigner teachers, it turned out to be quite an insightful experience and a lot of fun. There are occasional lunches or dinners that teachers are expected to attend. I've heard that in some branches these can be a bit of a chore but again, at my branch there is a good bunch of people so it's often a warm up for the rest of the evening.

12) Then consider the quality of life issues - things that are important to you that aren't mentioned here (housing, furnishings, bathroom, access to recreational facilities, shopping, banking).
Ask the foreign teachers at the specific branch as they should know the ins and outs. They like their staff to be nearby or a short subway ride away. Some areas are known for smaller apartments such as PNU as it's a major university area and the accommodations tend to be smaller, student style rooms. The trade off with this area is it's very popular with foreigners because of the bars and restaurants. It's a negotiating point. The university has a good running track and you can easily find good walking in the hills around there. Banking is a major concern if you want to send money home. Again, the existing teachers should have the low down.

I'm one of the teachers who is leaving and in spite of a rocky start, I would whole hearted recommend them to anyone who wants to teach and not just be a glorified babysitter. If you want to you can PM me.

I got an offer from KJC in Pusan. It's the KJC near Busan National University of Education. I spoke with the Director and she seemed nice. She told me all of the foreign teachers were really nice there. After reading this forum, I had a sense of what questions to ask. She told me teachers were responsible for correcting journal topics every week. That didn't seem like a big deal to me but one of the current teachers told me that they correct more than 220 journal topics per month. The director also said teachers are responsible for speech tests for all the students one time per week. The same current teacher said she does around 220 speech tests per month. They are only 2 minutes long. I was told the pay was 2,100,000 Korean Won for 35 hours per week. Overtime was 18,000 Korean Won per hour and 30,000 Korean Won for overtime worked on the weekend. I have my reservations about this contract. Any suggestions?

That's interesting because I was going to replace a female teacher at KJC in Pusan. I rejected the offer last night. Before I spoke to the director, the three foreign teachers I spoke with said nothing about journals and speech tests. However, they did say the Korean head teacher was a nut-case. The foriegn teachers told me the contract was very bad.

No problem. Can I flip a desk, too?

Anyone from KJC ever post on this forum? I'd like to know if there are any "happy" teacher there, too.
