Looky here

The jist of it is this. It's harder to get teachers with all the things they have to do at immi. Wages are at about 2.5 mil a month and rising.

Anyone want to go to Daegu. Unfortunately this is hakwon jobs they're talking about.

My wife and I looked at that, and they embellished on their figures (the hagwon owners or whoever were quoting costs). That person is claiming that it now costs 4 million a month to have a foreign teacher. They are adding in the cost of pay plus housing, plus yearly bonus.

They're also claiming that flight tickets cost 3.5 to 4 million won.

They said that last year, average monthly costs were about 2.5 million. Somehow, they claim this has gone up to 4 million per month.

The comments are a real hoot at the bottom. Lots of Koreans ripping IMB. Hilarious stuff. One of the said, "Maybe he wants us to learn English so we can read the Bible in English." Others said that the new rules are causing higher hagwon costs, rather than getting rid of them.

If enough people start complaining the government might step in to cap what hakwons can pay their foreign teacher. Now THAT would be interesting...to read all the fury on Dave's should that ever happen. Laughing

On a serious note hakwons have been blaming the foreign teachers for high costs for years. I remember a few stories like this story where the guy was taking a taxi and started talking to the taxi driver. The taxi driver asked him how where he worked and how much he made. Being an obliging sort of chap he supplied the information whereupon the taxi driver told him that he was being underpaid (at 2.2 million working for a P.S.) and told him to work for hakwons as they pay 3-4 million a month as all the hakwons in his area informed him that is what they pay their foreign teachers.

Which isn't surprising to have a hogwan owner lying to anyone, even the customers, so the owner can keep more money while the customer thinks the foreigner is getting it.

Which is funny because anyone who has been here a reasonable amount of time knows the high cost comes from the boss needing a fair bit of cash to keep his extra-marital affairs running smoothly.

Anyway, it almost seems like there's a conspiracy to get hagwons to fall out of favor with the public and get all English education centered on the public schools where it'll be better controlled, isn't there?

Yep.

I mentioned before that hagwons were made illegal for a time. My wife remembers that from when she was a child, but the government's attempt to kill them off never worked.

This battle has been going on for years.

?

Don't forget the brand-new computer in his office or the nice new car as well.

Which will of course be conveniently forgotten by said boss as soon as he explains/lies to the next mom why his prices are so high.

Ah yes, nothing like your boss claiming poverty and saying that he can't pay you quite yet and then seeing a new hagwon bus, a white picket fence around the property and the school being repainted.

/no I haven't worked there in years
//yes, I used to be a stupid newbie
