I'm thinking about a trip to Vietnam and Cambodia this February. Anyone else doing the same? I would rather not travel alone and abhor package tours. I also have a contact in Vietnam who runs a travel company so I can get some info. |

Hey, Lawyertood, keep me posted on this, as I would love to see both countries sometime. May go and visit a friend of mine in February, but we'll have to see about that. |

I've been lazy about booking as well but need to get on the ball checking on appropriate visas....I would like to see Angkor Wat, hit the beaches in Vietnam and whatever else the area has to offer. Maybe we can organize our own "loosely packaged" group tour..... |

FYI, I spent 1 month in Cam, 1 month Viet, 2 weeks in Lao last winter. Feel free to ask away - I'll even show you the beach where I'm retiring to in 3 years!
Regards,
G. |

the visa's are quite easy to sort out. go to the embassy here for your vietnamese visa. you will need some photos. your travel agent can do it for you but it will cost about 15,000 won more. if i remember correctly, the embassy charges about 33,000 won. vietnam airlines has a thing where you can fly into hanoi and fly out of saigon which is perfect if you plan to see the county and then head into cambodia. from there just head west to angkor and then fly out via siem reap directly into saigon to your connection home.
regarding the cambodian visa, any travel agent in saigon can do it for you in a couple of days.
spend some extra time in cambodia. most people only give it a few days, ususally in angkor, but it deserves more.

I've already been to Cambodia and Vietnam, and had a great time! I might be interested in going again, but I might not be on vacation during February. If people are still planning on going closer to the time, I might want to come along
Unless, of course, I have to work |

Does it have to be in February? My month off is in January...debating whether I'll travel or not.
I'd also like to point out that big groups of people are a risky venture. I went with my otherwise great roommate and my best friend here in Korea to China and Thailand last winter, and it totally sucked because we all had different aims for our trip. I'm kinda discovering that I only like to travel with one other person. |

I've been to Vietnam twice on two different occassions as well as Cambodia. They are extremely easy countries to travel independently.. and you'll meet tons of people on that trail. There is essentially only one route to go through Vietnam (and you'll continuously see alot of the same people on the same buses and towns as you travel in one direction or another). Same more or less with Cambodia.. people more or less go directly to the main few places with little variation whatsoever.
Regardless.. both are amazing countries to travel through. I'd do them both again in a heartbeat. |
