I'm thinking of taking a part time (20 hour a week) morning job that will ponsor an e2 visa for me. Do you think i should ask them for some key money (not a lot, only 1 or 2 mill) or would that be considered bad form? I don't want housing from them, i'll pay the rent but just some key money.

Legally, anything over 22 hours per week is considered to be full time and you would be entitled to full benefits.

are you an f-2? Do you need housing?

if you need it, ask. if you don't, don't.

bad form? no. Not here, not in any country/ culture.

Do you want it for housing or do you want to stick it in a bank for a year? If it's the later...it's not going to happen.
