|
|
My wife said she was reading Daum news tonight, and found this link:
http://news.media.daum.net/society/affair/200803/09/kukminilbo/v20272941.html
It says that all Korean English teachers, from elementary to high school, will have 3 chances to pass a "teaching entirely in English" proficiency test in the next 5 years. If they flunk 3 times, their job will be changed to something else. I have no idea what else they'd do, but I'd be willing to be that a whole lot of public schools will be gaining extra library or janitorial staff!
I imagine there are a lot of Korean teachers under stress these days! |

Those who can, do.
Those who can't, teach.

My school already has 1076 janitors. They're called students! |

Wow, you are short-staffed! Your school must be really dirty! At my last school, we had over 1,200! |

Yeah, so?
I don't see any sweat on the brows of the Korean English teachers.
We teach class in English; have you seen anyone come in to the classroom to evaluate your proficiency from the higher levels of school administration who speaks English fluently?
I was evaluated by the school's math teacher, who has a vocabulary of about 300 words of English. She took a couple of photos, sat at the back of the classroom for five minutes, took a couple of notes, and left.
Were you interviewed by any Korean prior to being hired who spoke English fluently? Any Korean working for the school system?
The people running the show, as far as I can tell, cannot speak English very well, so how are they going to evaluate teachers, or the people who evaluate the teachers?
If the Ministry of Education had any sense, they would hire native speakers to evaluate the Korean English teachers. I wonder what the chances of this happening are?
On the other hand, there are some instances where even the phys ed teacher will be able to tell the Korean English teacher ain't cutting it. |

My guess is they will just re-define what constitutes able to teach in English.
In Belize, the literacy rate was 99%. You could write if you could provide a unque written signature. I saw people who drew little pictures for their names and that meant they could write. |

I do see a lot of sweating teachers-it actually sucks for them, but when did government Education officials make sound decisions? |

Here's a sample test for you:

Choose the correct answer
(1) Nice to meet you.
(a) Why are you talking to me?
(b) Thanks, it's great to be here.
(c) Nice to meet you, too.

I have a feeling the test will be a sick joke. Only the newbie teachers or young ones will receive any constructive criticism. While the firmly entrenched uncapable oldies will get an automatic pass. |

Yeah, I wonder how they'll enforce it. And what will they do with teachers who already have tenure.
If I were a tenured KET who had long since given up actually being able to speak fluent English I'd be sweating my ass off learning Hanja and computer programming. There are always extra blocks of those for someone to teach. Although to teach some computer programmes you probably have to use more English words in class than some English teachers do. |

First Korean teachers write the test...
Hmmm, maybe it won't be long before the Korean Government says "All of our amazing Korean teachers are amazing, as proven by the test they write. Hence, foreign teachers should also write a test just like our amazing Korean teachers do to prove their abilities".
And of course, the test for foreigners will be different.... aka TOUGH... the kind of TOUGH that 99% of the Korean teachers would fail. |

honestly, i think it'd be a good idea for FTs to write a test too. nothing extremely hard, but relevant to what they should know for teaching english at the level they will be teaching. as far as the korean english teacher testing goes, i don't see any of mine sweating it, so it's very possible that it's a bit of a joke (or they never think it'll be implemented). |

Yes. I'd actually prefer everybody write the same test, and then they can use the same pay scale for foreigners and Koreans based on the test results.
Since they want to make classes English only, all the foreign teacher needs is a cheap assistant/administrator, so foreigners' Korean ability doesn't matter. |
