|
|
Ya know, few things surprise me about Hill-Bill anymore but I gotta admit this caught me off-guard. I mean, I knew they could stoop pretty low to get the power they so dearly crave but this puts their political machinations into another realm altogether.
Today the Clinton camp announced their Antebellum South message for the New Century in yet another last-ditch effort to salvage Hillary's nomination.
Obama can move up from the field to the plantation house. He can become the First House Negro with his own big office.
Ya know, aside from the tired temerity of the suggestion, and the paternalistic tone of the whole matter, let's keep in mind that had any conservative candidate intimated the same offer, or even made a joke of it, he would have been accused of racism or at least gross sensivitiy.
But, oh Lordee, not the Clintons. They're liberals in a Party that has an imagined monopoly on virtue, or at least fair play.
Yes, Barack, come on down, you're the next Negro on "The Time Is Right!"
Next thing ya know they'll be sending Michelle for skin treatments to brighten her appearance to make the first photo-op together with the appearance more cosmetically congenial to all the Little Rock folks.
Aside from everything else, isn't this ploy just cause to sicken every American voter?
I mean, c'mon, if Obama so much as mentioned doing the same if the situation were reversed, why Hillary would be offended to no end. Her feminist sensibilities would be ruffled and Bill would come out swinging like a drunk redneck just emerged from the closet.
Oh, and let's jus' never you mind that the Clinton camp has been trying to portray Obama as unfit to lead. So I guess if anything unfortunate should befall Hillary in office, why Slick Willy would step in next.
This political circus act needs to be folded up and sent out of town for good.
So what would you do if you were advising Obama? And if you don't care, or don't support him, fine, but what's your reaction to the latest Clinton maneuver? |

Obama already made a statement to the effect of "you won't see me as a VP candidate this year".
Hillary's strategy is more subtle than you're giving her credit for and has nothing to do with race.
She knows she is not going to win through the electoral process. There is no way she can tear Obama down enough to overtake him in pledged delegates over the few primaries that remain. What she hopes to do, therefore, is tear him down enough that the super delegates doubt his ability to defeat McCain, and pick her instead. Unfortunately, the downside of this strategy is that she will severely alienate Obama supporters -- as she is already doing. What's the solution? Obviously, get Obama on the ticket, or, at a minimum, make it clear that she is offering to get him on the ticket. Presto, the party is healed. There would be significant pressure on Obama to accept the offer if this scenario played out.
That's the positive interpretation. Me? I think she's even more nefarious than that. I think she has absolutely no intention of putting Obama on the ticket. I think she's making a bogus offer as a gesture of conciliation toward the party elders (who might otherwise be very upset at her for attacking a fellow Democrat), and as a bait-and-switch for Obama-leaning fence-sitters. You like Obama but you're not sure about his ability to lead? Hey, vote for me and you get both! Then, when the convention comes around, she mysteriously picks somebody else, and she can either say she offered it to Obama and he declined (he said/she said), or just not bother to explain it at all and make the case that whatever Democrats think about her, she's still better than McCain. |

My favorite part is when Steve actually injects self-pity into this self-parody:

Is this a Freudian slip? There aren't many who could get 'conservative' and 'sensitive' into one sentence. |

You sometimes have to be very ruthless if you want to win at politics. For Obama to defeat what some comedian referred to as the "female Terminator", he may need to utilize some old Chicago gangland connections - if he has any ... |

Bill Bradley is a guy who I admire, mainly for his sportmanship both on the basketball court and on the campaign trail. If he thinks the Clintons are duplicitous, then liberals ought to stand up and pay attention. The Times of London had this to report from him today:
Quote: |
Bradley believes that Obama should keep his hands clean but is willing to throw some heavy punches on his behalf. The Clintons have long delayed releasing their tax returns and have refused to name the donors to the William J Clinton Foundation in Arkansas. Archivists are also blocking the release of hundreds of federal papers on White House pardons. We need to know whether there were favours attached to $500,000 contributions, such as the granting of pardons, squelching an investigation, awarding a contract or deferring a regulation, Bradley said. The Democratic party has got to be in dreamland if they think the Republicans are going to let these matters go. |
Mr. and Mrs. Transparency have managed to duck the spirit if not the letter of the reforms that led to the Freedom of Information Act and beyond. And Bradley is right to warn that it plays into McCain's hand for Obama to be forced to play dirty pool.
stillnotking surmised:

I quite agree with you about her shrewdness and the distinct possibility that she might have this maneuver in mind. But that doesn't excuse her paternalism, or should I say maternalism.
I just find it highly presumptuous to the point of arrogance for a candidate in her precarious position to be making such an offer. It smacks of condescension of the worst sort to me and that's my biggest beef with it.
As for this:
Quote: |
Hillary's strategy is more subtle than you're giving her credit for and has nothing to do with race. |
No, I'm insinuating that her "strategy" as you call it amounts to little more than subtle racism. When was the last time a trailing White presidential candidate offered a VP spot to a leading White opponent?
And why should I give her the benefit of the doubt: she made a crack several years back about Indian Americans owning convenience stores that convinced me she's not above racism.
But even this should not be the main concern because right now many Blacks who trusted the Clintons are beginning to get very uneasy with how they perceive her to be treating Obama. If the influential in that community begin to believe she's not giving him the respect he is due as the frontrunner because of his race, she's heading for even bigger problems down the road than she realizes.
Consider the meat of this further excerpt from the article cited (above):
Quote: |
The explosive subject of race is not far from the surface. The internet is buzzing with accusations that Clintons team made Obamas face look blacker on a recent television advertisement challenging his foreign policy credentials.
Clinton mucked in by denying rumours that Obama was a Muslim then adding the rider, as far as I know.
In Mississippi, which has a 36% African-American population, Clinton floated the idea that Obama could be her vice-president. Ive had people say, Well, I wish I could vote for both of you. That might be possible some day, but first I need your vote, she said.
Clinton was the star guest at the Democratic partys annual dinner in Canton, Mississippi, but the hall was barely half-full. Underscoring the importance of race and gender in this contest, white women tended to be for Clinton, while African-Americans of both sexes were solidly for Obama. Clinton earned credit for turning up at all Obama arrives in the state for just one day of campaigning tomorrow and went on to pledge in a contrived southern drawl that no matter who won Mississippi, Ill be there for you.
However, African-Americans said they would be outraged if she were to rely on the votes of superdelegates to deny Obama the chance to become Americas first black president.
Sylvester Tate, 46, who had travelled for two hours to hear Clinton speak, said: It would be insulting and ridiculous for them to swing the election to her. I hate to say it, but it would be based on race. |

Not a bad piece for the editorial page.
If you remove parts I highlighted maybe we can get it published.
Just too much self aggrandizing crap, simply hurts the credibility of the
rest of the arguement. |

I have recieved an email from someone who works on campaigns in Oregon and he ran into one of the superdelgates from Oregon who has endorsed Clinton. The superdelegate told this person that clearly they made a mistake and are frustrated with their campaign tactics. |
