...for your after school classes?
I have been told that I have to buy 50,000 won worth of books (the teacher's copies) for my school. Im EPIK by the way.
Is this common practice? |

I've always purchased my own teaching materials. There is nothing more irritating than being given a pile of crap material to use. It's much easier to have your own material that you have experience in teaching with & use that.
Consider it part of your personal development. All teaching materials should be your own property.

| No. I would flat out refuse to. I was told there are funds I can use, but I've never bothered to. I just used the books they had & make extra worksheets to go along with them. |

| I bought a few New Cutting Edge and American Headway textbooks. I'll use one for my parents' class. The school offered to pay for it, but I felt I wanted to hang onto it after I left school. They probably would've let me have it anyway, but it was just 15,000 and I'm going to use it later on. |

I brought a shed load of book over with me (mostly teaching reference books that are getting a bit dusty TBH through lack of use) and have purchased a couple more since I've been here, although I've just been told by our new library assistant/teacher that if I want any new books, then she'll order them for me and, presumably, the school will pick up the bill, provided of course that I don't take the pi55.
I don't begrudge laying out for new books. I picked up English Communication 2 the other week which is good. Comes with an audio CD and only cost 12,000 won and should easily be good for a semester, maybe two, and that's with using it thrice weekly with my HS 1st graders. Think everyone should have a broad arsenal in their language resource armoury. |
