Association for Teachers of English in Korea (ATEK: http://atek.or.kr/)

Firstly, most Koreans see the need to lessen militant labour unions
and associations and not create more. Secondly, if I were a business
owner the last person I would give a job to would be an ATEK member.

Why?

Quote:
ATEK aims to solve difficulties and troubles that many foreign teachers now face. He enumerated the issues; unpaid salaries, pensions, taxes and health insurance, unsafe and inadequate housing arrangements, arbitrary changes to employment contracts and employers refusal to provide letters of release as well as unfair banking practices.

Thirdly, this thing will be totally voluntary, so why join? For this?

Quote:
He was also confident that the association will improve professional development of its members and noted that membership would be easy.

What does the above mean? Professional Development seminars? wek!

The only worthwhile thing I can see coming out of this is:

Quote:
In the long run, ATEK will pursue ``visa flexibility. The Japanese government allows visa flexibility whereby teachers can enter the country and work for any employer unlike Korea where educators must remain with their sponsors and are not allowed to transfer to other workplaces.

The Korean mindset and attitudes are probably 25-50 years behind those
of the Japanese, so don't hold your breath.

The organization will likely not gain enough power soon enough to heighten awareness among hakwon or school owners. Besides, you can always not mention your membership. I can imagine that some people, who have become members, will throw a flag up to their hakwon owners when something goes awry at things are wont here and say "I'm part of this union," but the hakwon owner will just fire them.
