How far is it from Seoul by train?
What's the place like? Is it nice, with good amenities?
Thank you. |

I went there once about two years ago. It's a cesspit. Seriously the dirtiest city I've ever seen. The bus stop consisted of a cement shack with vending machines for tickets and the bathrooms were leaking out onto the main floor.
Spent one night, downtown was ok-ish. The foreign community seemed to consist entirely of GIs though. |

indeed, I've visited a few times and always left with the impression that a day is more than long enough to be there.
There is a very small teacher community and a bar where they tend to hang out, but thats it. A real backwater. |

| It's an ok town...depends what you want. If you're a party person, don't bother. If you are ok by yourself, and want quiet, it's good. |

Gunsan was my first city. I got there in 1995. You think it's bad NOW...
The funny thing was, when I was in the departure lounge at Pearson Airport in Toronto, I bought a book. The clerk at the bookstore was an Asian woman. She asked me where I was going. When I told her "Korea", her eys lit up. "*I'M* from Korea!" she said, "Which city are you going to?". When I told her i was going to Gunsan she siad "Oh...I'm sorry...". And that was the end of our conversation. That was in fact, the last conversation I had on Canadian soil, and was the one running through my head as I stepped onto the plane 20 minutes later for my flight to Korea.

Left in December. Worked there for two and a half years. Know the community and schools quite well. Where might you be working?
The city itself is nothing special. Couple temples, nice park (Eunpa), a glorified hill that the locals have confused with a mountain. Everything you need. Emart, Lotte Mart, Lotte Cinema, plenty of good eats (Korean and Western).
Contrary to previous posts, there is actually a large flock of foreigners. A close knit group of about 70 teachers. Add an entire base of US solders and the city is overrun with foreigners on the weekends.
Main complaints:
Jets, helicopters and bombers flying overhead. Around the clock.
Pollution: Surrounded by slash and burn farming communities. Some big industrial plants on the coast (BASF, HANGLASS). West coast is nasty during the spring. Not many blue skies.
To answer your question, about a three hour tour from Gunsan to Seoul.
Good luck! |
