I am considering staying with my current employer for another six months. My job is great, no complaints aside from my apartment which is too small for me and my guy to spend another 9 months in. They have already asked me to renew and for various reasons I can only do six months. So I need to know what is fair to ask for on a six month contract. I want to change apartments, and obviously I would like a pay-increase but what about airfare? and a pro-rated severence? Advice?

You are worth as much as your negotiating skills can get you.

The option is yours to agree or to leave.

>Severance: Make sure you get your severance pay when you complete your year of employment. As far as pro-rated severance, you could ask for 50% of one months salary as a "bonus." If your employer pays your severance upon completion of the contract, then your employer isn't obligated to pay severance pay after you work another six months of employment. Reason being is that you didn't work one year.

>Pay increase: 125,000 KRW

>Be sure to get all the changes written in the contract before you extend.

Alternatively you could request not to be paid severence until the end of the 18 months and receive 18 months worth at the higher rate. This only works if you trust you boss to pay you -- sometimes risky in Korea but you are the best judge of this and labor will back this up.

Also, you should negotiate your return fare (due to you from the first contract) and a small airfare amount to use for your vacation, assuming you will get one.

Are you doing a home leave between contracts?

Is there any chance they can roll your airfare and severence into your salary?

Agreed. The 1.5 million airfare, or whatever it will cost, should be given since you won't be going home. Six months extra is worth airfare one way after you are finished. After 12 months, take your sev. Make sure you get at least 40% extra sev after the 6 extra months, although it should be 50%. My choice would be to stay in the small apartment and tough it out. Just ask for a bigger raise. Of course, your boss might just tell you to F off after asking for all that so I don't know. Just my two cents.

I will have to go home it is rather important that I do. Hopefully, the situation will improve at home and I will be able to stay on until the end of the year.

Thank-you for your advice, I wanted to make sure I wasn't be extreme in my demands. Thanks again!
