Wow, back in Canada pounding the virtual pavement for a job. I haven't really had to look for a job in Canada since... since... 1992. Pretty much it's always been word of mouth openings. Anyway, most of the major employers (IBM, CIBC, Intuit, etc) and head hunters these days employ an online resume submission service. You don't simply email your resume/cover letter to the person doing the hiring. It's all vetted via a web front end. Based on my experience with Microsoft, they probably have a bot that scans for certain key words (XML, CSS, Framemaker, etc) and then forwards it to real meat if it hits the target keywords.

Yup. That's why they ask for your resume in text.
