For quite some time now I've been considering getting a small 'companion' dog (I'd had my mind on this even before I left the UK, so this is NOT just an impulsive decision!)

I've been to a number of dog shops in Chungmoro (Seoul) and also to a few in parts of Busan, and for the most part I've been pretty unimpressed with what I've seen, in terms of the actual treatment of these animals (at times, I've been downright angered) and also their overall condition (Many of the cats they also sell at these places seem to be in a real state) It's pretty clear to me that these people care about one thing, and one thing only.... MONEY.

Soooo.... questions:

1) Has anyone purchased a Shih Tzu as a puppy in Korea? And what are they like temperament wise (generally)?

2) Does anyone know of, or has purchased a puppy themselves, from a PRIVATE breeder here. Or can at least tell me of a GOOD dog shop.

3) Is it possible to get health insurance for a puppy/dog here? Rough prices per month?

4) Can anyone recommend a vet that speaks good English and actually knows what he or she is doing?

5) Also, is it possible to take a dog on holiday with me to Thailand/Vietnam without the need for quarantine at either end? (As I will have to do in the UK Sad )

6) If not... are there such things as boarding kennels in Korea, and does any one know of any reputable ones? (I'm not about to dump a puppy in one of these 6 weeks after I've got it BTW. I'm thinking longer term, or in case I need to dash back home)

I'd rather avoid the dog shops, as I don't want a sick animal on my hands... then again, if it means I can get it the hell out of one of those places, and that it doesn't end up being someone's substitute child, or chained up in some grotty alleyway all day, it could only be a good thing!

Cheers!

I bought mine from the Boshintang market in Moran. She's a pretty cool dog. Super, super friendly but she was pretty messed up when I got her. She had a cold and was riddled with worms and fleas.
Yeah it was a stupid idea but the alternatives were a million times worse I'm sure. I don't know the answers to any of your questions though. At least not any that'd be helpful 'cause I'm not in Seoul.

there is an organtization called KARMA which i think is the equivalent to ASPCA or RSPCA.

there are some nice pure breeds there that have been dumped cos the owners didnt want to pay the vet bills.
alot of them only have skin problems but i guess that is enough to get dumped here in korea.

the animals up for adoption are checked by a vet and are treated for their conditions.
the conditions of the facilities are pretty bad, and if the animals arent adopted within 1 month, they are put down. but at least they have a chance there.

it might be worthwhile to check it out, if you dont mind that they arent 6 weeks old.

good luck finding your new companion

Smile
