So far, the only time I've gotten a letter of recommendation from a Korean was when it was an in-house situation (i.e., I was applying for a contract renewal at a college and the process required my dept. head, him, to write a recommendation). All my other letters of recommendation have been from waygukkins.

What experiences have others had with asking a Korean for a letter of reference, please?

I've got a letter in Korean written, stamped and signed by the Principal of my first public school (who also happened to be the head of the Suwon Principal's Association). Korean teachers are generally in shock and awe when they see it. These things are not common from a public school principal.

I've heard of hagwon directors/supervisors giving letter of recommendation in which they say, "just write what you think and I'll sign it."

I just wrote one up and had my directors (a few, over the years) sign it.

It is a common practice for many people who agree to give a letter of reference to ask you to write it yourself so they can just sign it and save time.

But I was thinking of requesting one written in Korean. Certainly, at the ps I'm at only a couple of teachers would be capable of writing one in English. Certainly not the principle or vp.

Good point. I've only ever gotten recommendation letters from near-native English-speaking directors. Maybe, to save on your vp or principal's time, you could get a Korean friend to write up (in Korean) what you want to include in the letter...

I'd just be weary of getting a crappy recommendation letter in Korean if they write it themselves - something along the lines of "punctual", "always did his best" and "taught well".

I think my principal and vp are both smart enough to write a good one if they are motivated. They might not want to however if they think this is a preliminary step on my part to find work elsewhere.

In any event, I'm going to try suggesting that I want this before I proceed any further with them toward ironing out the contract issues for my upcoming contract renewal. Seems like I have a little leverage since they want me to complete this contract renewal process.

I can always ask my supervisor/co-teacher to suggest to them what to say. She knows my teaching the best and reports to them about it anyway.

I got one from from my Korean ex-boss that I had to edit three times (everytime the secretary 'fixed' something, different mistakes appeared). In the end, I accepted a bizzare, slightly garbled, letter of praise written in Konglishee. Laughing

Yes. When I applied for my current job, I asked for and received letters of recommendation (추천서, chucheonseo) in Korean from my director and two of the corporate execs I taught one-on-one.

I got the job, so they couldn't have hurt. Smile

Write a good one up on the company paper and get your boss to sign it. Get a Korean to write one up for you (someone you trust) and get the boss to sign that one too. They don't have to be the same you know Smile
