Below is a link to the Friends of the Earth's international website, where they are supporting Korean environmental groups in opposing the grand canal project.
Check out the link, the information about the canal and please consider signing it.

TO THE MODS. On top of a recent canal post of mine which you removed to the zone of death that is the Current Events forum, I see another eslcafe member's canal post was also removed to there.
Could you please explain why, in recent days, posts connected to the grand canal - a major project by the Korean government, affecting loads of Korean people across the Korean peninsula - have been removed to a forum that generally has no particular relevence to Korea at all? |

Probably because it has no relevance to 99.9% of teachers here either.
It certainly won't affect the living, lives or livelyhood of 99% of current E2 teachers and will probably have little impact on anyone else who reads this forum either.
We'll all be long gone a long time before they ever turn a spade of dirt on this debacle.
Oh, AND the header of the forum does read:
General Discussion Forum
Forum for general discussion on issues related to *living* in South Korea. No off-topic posts here either!
I guess this one will be headed for the C/E or off-topic forums as well.
As an alternative, you could always post it on Naver. It will certainly draw some response there.

Agreed.. It doesn't have anything to do with the day to day lives of expats living in Seoul...
Besides, I'm all for the canal. |

Why? I'm guessing because you want it to be a huge failure? |

It didn't take them long to move this thread, did it? How many pages was that poll of Qinella's before they finally caught it? |

A lot of the posters on daves have been in Korea for years and may be here for many years to come. Many of the teachers in Korea are married to Koreans and the number of children born to these international couples. Even for those who are not connected by marriage and family to Korea, and may be gone in a few years, the canal project will still have an impact on our lives while we are here.
Who of us here has never gone out to the countryside or just walked around their town in the weekend or between classes and found themselves thinking "wow, this country can have some much charm and potential sometimes... it's so depressing the way they keep on buggering it up".
Korea would be a much more livable place for locals and foreigners alike if the Korean government took protecting their environment seriously. The grand canal will see even more of the countryside being gouged up and covered with roads and concrete. |

I tend to agree, not many teachers venture into the CE forum (and probably for good reason given some of the conversations that take place). There seems to be a pretty regular set of people who post in this forum which is pretty low (in terms of the various different teachers).
It would be nice if they'd make this a sticky, but I have a feeling that wouldn't fly as they've removed all of the sticky threads from the GE forum and haven't put them back up. Even the book exchange thread is gone, so I doubt they'd make the canal thread a sticky or put it back in the CE forum. I guess all you can do is ask.
I'll go over and sign the petition and try to pass the word around. It's safe to say, except for getting word around on here, it's pretty difficult to get foreign teachers involved in stuff.
There was a nice write up in my university's magazine and I'll post it when (and if) they actually put the issue online (the print edition just came out a few days ago, but it appears they haven't updated the site in over a year). |
