I need to buy a desktop--mostly for torrents but for other basic usage. I don't want to spend a lot--I wanna keep it on the cheap.
I'm completely uninterested in games, don't do any video editing or programming. However, I think I should get a somewhat decent soundcard because I do some music recording. |

Anything "dual core - entry level of the shelf" and get a BIG HDD or 2 added in extra will suit the tasks you have indicated.
250k for the machine and 120k for the extra HDD space (a 500 gig drive should be lots).
Most (all?) current mainboards have OK sound (5.1 digital surround sound) is available on them without the need for an extra sound card.

it is not recommended to buy an average soundcard for recording, especially onboard audio. the problem with most of those cards is that the analog/digital converter chips are locked at 48kHz. you need a minimum of 24 bit/96kHz for proper recording.
PCI audio cards
firewire audio interface
USB audio interface
I use an edirol fa-66 firewire interface. it has 6 in/6 out, spdif, midi, 24 bit 192kHz, 2x XLR/TRS, mic pre-amp and Mac OS X CoreAudio and WindowsXP WDM & ASIO 2.0 Support. everything you need for a basic home recording studio (- the monitor speakers ).
