I bought a brand spankin new laptop when I was home, then the hard drive failed about a month and a half later. The company replaced it, but it didn't arrive before I had to be back here. So, now it must be shipped to me and I have a few questions if anyone has previously had to do this. It's coming from Canada.

How much is the tax that I will have to pay? Percentage?

Does it matter if the computer is new or used? Could I say it was used to get out of paying the tax?

Any way to get out of paying for the tax? Like maybe labeling it as something else(like rare books??haha) so that I don't have to pay the tax?

Is there just a tax on anything that comes into the country over a certain dollar amount?

If I insure anything worth that much I will have to pay tax on it?

Would it make a difference if it was shipped from the U.S.??

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!!

from korea customs on post mail/express

i dunno if they would consider a computer a necessary household goods. but if you bought the computer before you moved here, you shouldn't have any problems. if they hold it at customs, you will have to call them. just explain your situation and i am sure they will accommodate.

when i moved here from japan, i shipped all my gear (some fairly new) as 'USED' and had no problems nor paid any taxes.
