Where are some good places to look? I have two Korean friends helping me look, and I'm having trouble finding anything good. See, it's my second year, and I don't really want to work at a public school just yet, but I also don't want to work at a hagwon with a kindergarten, split shifts and ten hour days.
When I browse through the Dave's listings, it seems every hagwon has a kindergarten. My Korean friends have said the same thing, "oh, we found a hagwon for you! The hours are 10am to 9am--oh wait, that's bad isn't it?" I'm really looking for something with less than 6 teaching hours per day. Preferrably four or five.
But, what's more important than teaching hours is the quality of the curriculum and the behaviour of the students. That and I want to stay in approximately the same area as I live in now (Anyang, or Bundang).
Where should I look? |

In a dream world.
Most hagwons have either kindy or splits because there is nothing to do when the kids are in school or the adults are at work (except kindy).
There are a few hakwons that exist on the elementary/MS racket with hours like 3-10 but most of them try to get a few kindy kids because they are so profitable.
HS and adults will have you working early and late.
Oh Sung Shik used to run a non-kindy program but I don't know if that is true anymore and you should be very careful about the other stuff that causes grief in hakwons (unpaid overtime, no medical/pension, etc).

Try Avalon. They have a branch in Bundang, and maybe Anyang - I'm not sure. They teach elementary and middle school with no splits. Apparently the housing is top notch too. The salary is average, however (2.1 - 2.3).
I don't work there, admittedly, but I went for an interview and seriously considered it.
In my experience, in my first couple of years or so in Korea I never had any trouble getting a hagwon without Kindy - usually within a week. This is in Seoul, though, I have to admit.
You should look at some of the larger chains, of which Avalon is only one. They are almost constantly recruiting. Maybe be more flexible with your location and be willing to move up to the big smoke. |

Actually, one just opened up close to Anyang in Uiwang (Avalon). I might go drop a resume off on Monday and see about starting in June. |

There are jobs out there but not always easy to find. I know of one that is 25 hours a week (4-10 2 days and 5-9 3 days) that pays about 3.6m but it only hires British people and prefers experienced teachers usually with teacher certification. Those jobs don't come along all that often though. There are quite a lot of hagwans which do the 3-9approx shift though.. I think that shouldn't be too hard to find. Send your info out to every recruiter you can find and I'm sure you can find a job within a week or so.
(However if you're one of those idiots that refuses to use recruiters then expect to keep looking until 2014 or later for your job) |

Don't know how you have a problem finding a non-kindy job. Every job I have ever had in Korea did not involve kindy. I've been here on and off since 1998. No problem. My current work is in Anyang. M 2:30-10:30, W/F 3:10-10:30. T/TH - 3:50-8:10. I've got a 30 minute break each day. I'm paid much better than the average teacher as well. Perhaps you ask for too much. |
