Murder trial set for French mother
March 14, 2008
PARIS ― A woman suspected of killing three of her children at birth and storing two of their bodies in a freezer in her home in Korea will be tried for the murders, French judicial authorities said on Wednesday.
Veronique Courjault, who has been in custody since October 2006, is expected to go on trial later this year in the city of Tours. If convicted, she could be sentenced to life in prison.
At a hearing on Wednesday, the examining judge dropped charges against her husband, Jean-Louis, who had been investigated for complicity in the murders, his lawyer said.
Veronique Courjault, 39, is alleged to have given birth to two children while the family was living in Seoul, and to have killed both infants. Police say she admitted killing a third child in France.
Psychological tests determined she suffered from a medically recognized condition in which a woman denies her pregnancy and in extreme cases may kill the baby after birth. Reuters |
