Hi everyone,

I am coming to Korea this summer, and am beginning to apply to schools and programs. I am still debating between doing EPIK or working at a hagwon because I have heard a lot of pros and cons about each.

I want to be in Busan or Daegu and am wondering what people there now think of it. Can you let me know what city, and whether you are in EPIK or a hagwon and what you think of the overall experience? I realize that every situation is going to be different, but I am trying to get a general idea of what to look for and what to avoid.

Thanks!

You pretty much answer your own question.

Done both!......................................................couldn't pay me enough to work at a haggy again!.........................But I know some peeps who wouldn't work anywere else..........................................................................in Busan now I liked Seoul better IMHO.................... but lots of peeps love Busan. There is more here than any other city ................well except Seoul lol

I would say that LARGER is better for the most part.

I will give you the same advice my cuz gave me when I first came. He had been here ummm 8years or so I think.

Anyway here goes.........

"Coming to Korea is like being a virgin........nothing I can say will prepare you for it you just gotta do it. like a virgin you are going to mess it up at first and get screwed........but getting screwed can be fun Shocked once you know how to screw."

good luck mate

I agree with the other op, in that you should avoid working in a hagwon. On the other hand, working in a hagwon is very helpful for total newcomers in learning, practicing and honing your teaching skills, which will help you not to be an organic tape recorder in a public school job.

Second, many people want to work in Pusan and the main EPIK intake for Spring 2008 was finished less than a month ago, but you should hurry up and apply anyways. I've heard that EPIK does not fill all the openings they have and some openings are even created to meet the supply at that time.

EPIK's recruiting works on a first-come, first-served basis, so I suggest you go on line and fill out the application in a timely fashion. You do not know who also wants what you want and how many of those applicants there are. I would suggest that you think of asking to be placed in an area, which is near Pusan or your other choice, yet is more rural or a smaller city, which may help your application. Good luck.
