Sorry if this has been asked before, i can't find it in a search.

Anyway, any tips on avoiding the import tax. I got some electronics on the way to me....on the costumes slip it reads "used electronics value $600" damn, i told my parents not to write the value or that it was electronics.. Will i have to pay the tax? how much? Even if i'm leaving in august? Can i avoid it? can i have it returned to the sender? Thanks for your help.

If you can prove that they are personal effects, then you don't need to pay tax on them.

Otherwise, it's between 25-30% on the value PLUS shipping costs.

Not writing the value isn't enough. If the tax was already placed on it, I don't know if there's anything you can do, but, yeah, marking the electronics used, taking them out of the packaging, maybe even rubbing some dirt or something on them, that can help. I had an ipod touch shipped over to me. Parents included no box or documents, wrote used, etc. Didn't pay a dime.

thanks for the replys. It hasn't arrived yet. How do i prove that they are "personal effects". It is a birthday present. I wish my dad hadn't sent it. I really don't want to pay a 30 percent tax on a 600 dollar item especially if i'm leaving in August. thanks again for your help.

You have to go to the post office or wherever they keep it (customs office?) and open it in front of them. If it's a birthday present, have they include a birthday card? That'll be enough.

My wedding dress was shipped from a store in NYC 6 years ago and it was rather expensive.. I was charged 25% on top Sad despite it being marked a gift (it wasn't.. haha, but the shop people knew I would have to pay some sort of tax on it and were kind to try and get me out of paying... didn't work and I just paid)..

Good luck.
