Anyone know where I can learn Cantonese here in Korea? Preferably in person, but online links would help also. I'll be moving to Hong Kong and need to learn.

You know Cantonese is ridiculously difficult and has seven tones for every vowel?

Maybe you could put an ad on the korea times website. Could be a student from HK or Guangdong who might want to make some cash part time.

From me?

LOL.. I speak Cantonese.. and frankly, unless you want to live in HK, you're better off learning mandarin.

As for the poster who says it's ridiculously difficult - I disagree. Razz

Isn't it the case as well that Guangdong cantonese is nearly completely different from Hong Kong cantonese. Gotta be a bit of a bummer.

I was under the impression that Cantonese was really hard as everyone has told me so. Forgive me if I'm mistaken

Yes, I plan on a long, long career in Hong Kong. That sucks about it being only useful in Hong Kong, but since I'll be there forever, yeah, gotta learn it.

Is it really so much different than mainland Cantonese? And (for arguments' sake) how different is Mandarin once you know Cantonese, and vice versa?

It's not only useful in Hong Kong. The lingo is a bit more wide-spread than that. There's a reason it's called Cantonese and not Hong Kongese.

The main problem is this (and yes, I would know, since I am Chinese/Hong Konger whatever).. cantonese in HK is mixed with a lot of locally developed slangs that those living in Guangdong don't understand. The accents are also different. Mainland Chinese who speak cantonese use words in a different way than those in HK, so Hong kongers also find it difficult to understand them.

Other than that, no, not a lot of difference. Just gotta watch what you say and how you say it.

I also speak hakka, too, for those interested..

Cantonese is also the language of overseas Chinese. So you could negotiate your way through China towns from San Francisco to Moscow. They speak a lot of Cantonese in KL as well I think and Hakka in Penang.

My wife is from Guangdong and she has no problem understanding the way people in Hong Kong speak Cantonese.
There are several hogwans in Seoul that teach Chinese. I'm sure that you could find one hogwan Chinese teacher that can speak Cantonese. We would be glad to help you but we living 2 hours from Seoul in Gangwan-do.

I lived in Hong Kong for 15 years and can speak conversationally, but the tones do need help. There is a waitress at Bless U bar in Itaewan who speaks very good Cantonese. She toook it at a hogwan (there is only 1 in Seoul who teach it. Talk to her and she can help you. Bless U is up the road from Dolce Vita-her Cantonese is much better than mine.
