I'm tired of hearing about this crappy school and that crappy school. Are there any white lists around on the net?

PayPal me $75+ and I will give you the contact information to a school I've done work at in the past that is hiring right now as the teacher they had lined up tried to come into Korea turned out only to have a purchased degree and was caught by Immigration.
And it's the holy grail of teaching, it's teaching adults in small classes in strictly conversation classes. |

In checking my PayPal account, I see you are yet to make a payment. Oh well, I'll just offer the job to someone else. |

I understand that it must be frustrating looking for jobs, when most of what you hear online is bad press. Yes, more often than not, you will hear bad press about schools on here, but please don't assume that it's all bad news over here or mostly bad news. Just because you don't hear droves of reports of good times, doesn't mean that they aren't happening. It's human nature for us to be more vocal when we are wronged than rewarded.
Remember that there are thousands of us over here and this forum represents a microcosm of the industry as a whole, so please measure your research carefully.
You also have to not fall into the habit that others get by assuming that all teachers that get wronged are telling the whole, honest, unfiltered and unbiased truth and that they are pristine angels that got a raw deal undeservingly. You're only hearing one side of the story. You're never going to hear someone say 'I got screwed, but...I may have aggravated or caused the situation by doing this...' Granted, many do get dealt a bad hand without cause and many, well...let's just say, that in my experience there are about as many questionable and shady teachers as there are questionable and shady schools, but you won't ever hear about that on here.
Best advice that I can offer is conduct your job hunt on the ground and in Korea. If you can't read or speak Korean, find a Korean that is nice enough to spend some time with you, practising their english, while they walk you around town and show you where the schools are. They're not hard to find, especially if you have a Korean with you. If they're not hiring, ask if they have phone numbers of some recruiters that they deal with. Many schools have some relationships with smaller operators that don't advertise on Eslcafe or Monster and are often short on teachers and long on jobs.
Once you get leads and offers, see to it that you talk to the current and former teachers of the school to get a collection of personal experiences there. Then trust your gut.
Good luck. |
