Hey everybody,
I am planning on going to South Korea, when i finish University, to teach English for a year or so. I have been reading some posts on this board and have formed an impression that many people seem to not really enjoy their time there so much. Is it as bad as some posts on this board would lead one to believe?
Also I am currently deciding on what area i would like to go to, Busan is a city that seems to take my fancy, i was wondering could anyone advise me about this area, or maybe even recommend other good cities? I am hoping to join some football/soccer team, will many cities have expat teams that I could join?
Also i was wondering whether it is hard to meet people over there? I don't really want to spen a year all on my lonesome in South Korea.
Thanks.
P.S. I realise these questions may get asked often but there is no info on living in Busan in the FAQ section. |

Hi,
I had the same dilemma before I came here a few years ago. I'd read a lot of negativity on this board and started getting second thoughts. In my opinion Daves doesn't always paint a true picture. Yes there are things about Korea that will irritate you, especially after you've been here a while. However, for me the positives outweigh the negatives.
Its a great option for when you finish university, in my experience the work is easy and saving money can be very easy depending on your lifestyle. If you're still a uni student you probably enjoy going out a lot, I do too and still save a fair bit every month.
Busan is a nice place and there's plenty of other teachers there to make friends with. However, for the most opportunities to make friends, join teams etc. Seoul is easily your best option. As for football, I play every weekend with a bunch of mates on a purely recreational basis. However there are a few leagues operating in Seoul and numerous teams to join if you're a decent player!
So overall, really don't pay too much attention to what you read on here, if you're an open minded person then there's a fair chance you'll really enjoy it here! |
