Cany anybody recommend a text book/course book/resource to assist in teaching what could be loosely described as "situation-based" English?
I have an advanced student who is familiar with grammar and can converse fairly well; now this person wants to begin learning different registers of English (for example: formal, standard, informal/colloquial, slang) to be used in certain "situations" (i.e., What should I say in this situation? What should I say if this happens?).
Aside from personal anecdotes and role-playing, it's obvious that with a lot of time, one could create all sorts of material...but for me to create enough material from scratch is impractical, primarily due to time constraints, so I'm hoping for some source material recommendations.

I don't know if this is exactly what you are looking for but you could try a series called, "Can You Believe It". It comes in 3 volumes, I don't know if they can really be described as different levels. The texts revolve aroung diffent true stories from the news, and use lots of idioms for the students to get their heads around.
I don't know if it can be called situation based, but it is a bit different. Other than that, probably your basic Interchange or Headway.
Hope this helps
