Interfaith dialogue has become an important exercise in finding the right words to overcome both extreme violence and ordinary misunderstanding. True progress, however, is best measured in deeds. The inauguration last week of Qatar's first Christian church a small Catholic chapel bearing neither bells nor visible crosses has been hailed as a welcome step forward in relations between Catholicism and Islam. But an even more dramatic development is under discussion just across the border: The Vatican has confirmed that it is negotiating for permission to build the first church in Saudi Arabia.

| Saudi is a bit different in that it sees itself as the "Holy Land" for Muslims. I would actually be shocked if they allowed a church to be built on their soil. There are quite a few churches in the UAE, and several others, including the new one in Qatar, scattered around the Gulf region so Saudi will probably not bend to any pressure from the Vatican. The new church in Doha is under very tight security from threats issued and even the main catholic church in Dubai was under tighter security from the furor associated with the Qatar church. In Saudi? That could be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back... |
